Hi guys

I'm own a lc70 swb 2010 and have 2 inch iron man lift kit istalled on it with the offset bushes have been running the car for a while now. Recently when i was on a trip and i was using 4H i hear a grinding noise coming from the gear box but when i disengage from 4H the noise stops.

So i took it to the dealer to check it out and they replaced the 4 wheel gear box on the warranty but when i took it for a test drive the noise was still there so took back and they replaced the gear linkage spke to them today and they said the noise is still there now I'm really puzzled cuz there saying it could have to do with the car hight which i could understand as its maybe putting stress on linkage but I'm not convinced could some one please advice me hear as I've run out ideas

All help would be much appreciated

Ps if it was the lift kit that wad causing the grinding noise i would of exp the noise a while back could it be the offset bushes ?

well everyone has used the iron man but stil your problem is not related to the uplift kit that's what i m thinking.....there might b a problem in its front differential or check your drive shaft the front one for scrunching something near to it.
well wait for the informative ppl.
where is crushers? and all the senior members

Well the sound only seems to happen around 60 kliks and above . It sounds exactly like the gears aren't ingaged properly !!!!

might be the hub locks at the front differential(not properly locked or something)...does it came with a hub lock electric bottom or free locking system

I got that once.... When the drive line and box was torque loaded it would rotate the transfer case a little bit and hit the floor pan... Sounded terrible.

Ive had a similar noise when the bash plate gets a stone wedged between the plate and the transmission.Sounds like the gearbox has done something really nasty. Similar if the plate takes a hit and pushes up against the tranny or worse noise if it gets bent enough to rub against the front drive shaft - thats really nasty.
I would have thought Mr Toyota would be checking things pretty closely and seen anything obvious while doing the repairs.

Perhaps with the lift the 4 Hi lever is not fully engaging due to the changes in geometry?? I am assuming Hi 4 is engaged by a stick on the floor being a new 70 series?? Does it do the same in Low 4??

Hope that helps

Well the latest update from the dealer is that the lift kit is putting stress on the shaft thats connected to the transfer case quick dallying i said i will fit the stock parts on again and see what happens

Good luck bit of a shame the kit has to come out. There are heaps of 70s with 50mm lifts, even late model ones, although we do not get the new model SWB here only 76s 78s and 79s

Trust me mate mr Toyota over hear is crap when i bought this car i was going for a car with good reliable history but all I've had ic crap

Yeah it does do it in 4 low as well . The thing is i have 3 guys who have the same ride as me and and the same lift kit and they don't have any problems

I had the same problem and it was indeed a front locker that wasnt correctly locked... Cleaned out the old grease, mildly greased up with new greas (not to much because it bonds with dust and than it blocks) and close it up and ready to go...

happened to me when i bought my LJ 78 few years back as i engaged the 4x4 it created a very loud sound but then it vanished i searched for everything so just done the same thing as you did........

Well theres no electric switch for the hub locks never thought it had any do u think it could have the old tip where u have to manually engage them from the hub its self

They may engage automatically when you shift into 4hi via an electric switch on the lever, I think you would soon discover if you had manual hubs, you would have no front drive in 4WD. All our new 70 series have manual hubs, but the SWB may be electric. How long have you had the vehicle??

Well just had a look before i start ripping out my lift kit and no i don't the front or rear hub locks. Pls bare with me as I'm not the most ace mechanically minded guy . Do u think that maybe when i shift into four wheel drive that the hubs lock automatically ????

Check the owners manual will all be in there or on a sticker on the sun shade or on the inside of the driver s door. Either that post a pic of the front hub will all become clear. Does it have factory lockers front and rear?? I know of 2 of the previous 79 series here ( Diesel turbo straight 6) that had to have new front diffs replaced under warranty. Having said that the hills they were on at the time were pretty steep.

Well be trying to upload photos but no success . Ive had the car since end of 2009 . I'm pretty sure there no manual hub locks looked in the owners manual and cant find anything that resembles whats in the book
