In the endless saga of finding places that will never again have my business I decided to go and get my old starter rebuild and have as a spare. I went to Edmonds Starters in Burnaby to get a QUOTE from them. They said to leave it and they will test it and call me back to let me know how much and what will be replaced. Prior to leaving the guy asked me what I was looking at spending on it and I said "$150, but call me before you do anything and give me a quote". I get a call back a couple of days ago letting me know the started is rebuilt and ready to be picked up - GRRRR. What the hell is wrong with people and why is it so hard to listen! :censor:
Now keep in mind that you can get a Toyota re-manufactured starter for $213, plus taxes and a $30 core charge (with our discount).
So I show up there today and after a pointless back and forth conversation about business practices and listening skills, the guy gave me a discount and I walked away never to come back with a rebuilt starter that is now painted an ugly silver color (over spray at no charge).
So I would recommend that if you chose to deal with them make sure you get stuff in writing before agreeing to anything and assuming you are dealing with intelligent people. I have yet to test the starter so I don't know how well it works but after taking it apart it looks like they replaced the usual parts but left the armature alone.
Proof again that if you want something done right - do it your self.

Thanks for the "heads-up" Mat. Too bad it had to be found out the hard way. The only one I know that comes recommended for 24V is Brian Roberts Electric in Victoria. He rebuilt a friend's alternator/vacuum pump off his shorty Safari for around $200. Not sure what all was replaced but the guy was pretty happy compared to the cost of shipping one in from Japan or Australia. Might be a good idea for a club sticky - the good the bad and the ugly - of all the Lower Mainland shops that work on Cruisers and 24V electrics.

There is a guy just off McCallum Rd. in Abbotsford that fixed the EDIC motor for me a few years ago. He works out of his garage and I cannot remember the address but I'd go to him again.

I've had mixed success with Western Starters on Mitchell Island. The young guy was very interested and helpful and reasonably priced; he even machined my solenoid contact surface for no extra charge when I bought those big copper contacts. However the older guy is cranky, impatient and charges more money for his work: I try to avoid him when I go in there.

We all try to avoid you old guys. :p

I believe you have to take each person, regardless of his/her age, and consider them as individuals. Some older folks are bitchy and so are some younger ones. In the case of Western Starter, I had direct contact with both of them and reacted accordingly. :hhmm:

I have been dealing with Warren down at Brighouse Auto Electric in Richmond for close to 20 years with work for starters, alternators and hydraulic drive motor repairs and have had good luck with them.I am sure they would have no problem with the JDM and 24 volt stuff.
