most of us on the island here try to avoid vancouver if possable i think you would have better luck asking the coastal cruiser, they are mostly from the vancouver area.
i googled your hotel,looks nice right downtown on robson street your shouldnt have any problems finding bars and entertainment in that area .

Imagine holding a fisheries conference in Vancouver. Unless it's specifically about sushi, I'd say you're about 1.5 hours too far East.

Nice bars: Gerrard's at the Sutton Place, and most any place on Robson between Denman and Burrard.
OF course if you're not looking for "nice", there's always Brandi's.

Avoid Davie st bars unless you swing that way not sure if the #5 Orange is still around worth a visit has lots of downtown history to it and is one of the last of the peeler bars.
