80 series will take some abuse, if he keeps the torque from getting stupid and puts a solid pinion spacer in the floater it should live quite well. Wouldn't tow with it but I tow heavy and it's a cruiser not a dually ... Should be nice

Just my 2 cents but keeping the Allison with the engine seems to make more sense. It's designed to handle the torque and it has the benefit of having the overdrive or double overdrive depending on the model. If you use the 4 speed auto the engine would be up there in rpm at highway speeds. The 80 series axles are pretty stout but might need to have chromoly axle shafts traded in. Obviously you'll have to tune the ecm at least to change the axle ratio if you keep the 4:10 gears. It's a great engine and if you can squeeze it into the 80 it would be awesome. I see 25mpg in my Duramax on long highway trips so your range would greatly increase and the torque would mean you could idle through a lot of off-road obstacles. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread out of curiosity.80 series will take some abuse, if he keeps the torque from getting stupid and puts a solid pinion spacer in the floater it should live quite well.
