On this assembly, can I remove the nuts and stick it in some decreas

That's the oil filter adapter, not the oil cooler. I would not submerge it in degreaser. Those passages inside need to be clean, and you definitely don't want solvent in them.

I chicken'd out. Taped up all the openings and went at the outside with a brass brush. Later when I removed the large bolt near the oil filter, there was a spring inside and some sludge! I wonder if I need to check that spring each time I do an oil change?

Is there a ball bearing or anything under the spring? I only found the cap and then the spring.

Found it! There’s an oil relief valve stuck in the housing. Will clean that out. When in doubt refer to the manual!
