FJ62 Hesitates, no power, rough idles at times

Finally beat this damn thing today. I dropped the tank and changed the pump. I did however discover while draining the 3 gallons in the tank that there was another 1/2 gallon of water in there. the inside of the tank was clean no sand or other junk. I sloshed the tank around to get the remaining water out. The FJ62 runs great idles a little too fast out of gear, 900 rpm in gear around 700. Shifts great and has pretty good power, better than my last one.

Lesson learned. If you have any water in the tank drain the entire tank. I drained the water originally about a gallon or so. But I guess there was some more hiding in there. No matter what anyone says Heet will not dissolve 1.5 gallons of water!

My observations on dropping the tank was there were not any sediment anywhere and it was generally clean. I say only traces of water in mine but a try to put some Heet during the winter months and I try to keep the tank full to prevent rusting and condensation of water.

Heet works good, but two bottles didn't do the trick on mine this time around. I hear it does well on smog checks as well.

This thing runs really well. Kind of surprised me a little. Drives like a dream....Not like our Seqouia but great for a FJ62

Thanks for the update! I think that your hesitation might have been to the water in the tank. 1/2 gallon seems too excessive. I would suspect your local gas station. I never fill up at a gas station while a big gas tanker is delivering fuel. It just will stirred up all the residual water sitting on the bottom of the gas stations resevoir tank and deliver it up to your tank. If the tanker hasn't deliver but is about to, the gas station has a nearly empty resevoir tank that might be near the bottom( more water). Other things that make a refueling tanker bad is the safety factor (fire) and the fact that the flow of traffic sucks with a big semi around. Did you ever try using any fuel additives before the repairs?

Congratulations Aaron. Hopefully I can still touch base with you when I am back in NY from Finland. I am sure that with all of the work that you have done I can get my 89' runnning well again too. -Graham

Yes, I tried two bottles of heet and it didn't seem to help....But now it runs really well.

Water in tank

Well, finally. And even though its been really frustrating you can look at it this way, you've really fixed everything else, so it should be in tip top shape.

Congratulations.

I know how you feel. My Jeep gave us hell for almost 2 years. Ran fine in the winter but only ran in the summer until it got hot. We got stranded twice out of town and dozens of times around town. After several dealers looked at it. First time it cost $650 for a new fuel pump. When it happened again, the second dealer wanted to do the same thing I decided they were hopeless. On-line searching turned up a problem with the computer--gets hot and shorts out. It took $75 I think for a new computer and it was running fine the last time I saw it.

Ok guys as promised here it is.....Let me know what you think....

Wow. She looks really clean. I'm glad you spent the time to figure it out.
As far as the high idle, you may want to recheck your TPS. When I did mine, it took some very fine fiddling to get it right.
And where are you that flowers are blooming already? I still have 2 feet of snow on the ground.

Thanks,

I'm located in Fresno, Ca, sunny and 70ish....I will play with the TPS a little more. It is an absolute pain to adjust......Sorry to say but Buick had it down when they made the Grand National. I set the TPS on that car with a specific voltage and adjust the idle with Idle Air Counts.....very easy and extremely accurate.....Funny I know I am a Toyota and Buick fan....Heck I just love ugly tough mean machines....I think both the FJ62 and Grand National fit the bill.

Is there still a strong market for these FJ62s, there was a few years back. I'm toying with selling this one....She is very clean and runs really good....Know anyone that might be interested or where to market this thing.....Two SUVs are a little over kill. One car of mine has to go.....I think I will keep the GN....tough decision but GNs are tougher to find than a FJ 62....Any thoughts....Thanks again for all of the help.

No, it is not that difficult to adjust the TPS properly. Like setting the timing of an F engine, you just have to learn how to do it and then carry on. Timing a small block Cheby is easy compared to an F engine but as most of us here have F engines so learning to adjust its components is a fact of life. Get it right and then leave it alone.

Thanks,
