Hello Guys.
I'm new to this forum.
A few days ago I finally got the FJ60 of a friend of mine running. Initially, another mechanic installed a "Hot Spark Electronic Ignition kit" (magneto ring and module) into the distributor. Since this mechanic supposedly is a hot shot, he should have done a perfect job... Then, I hooked up the wiring correctly to the coil, started the engine and ... it turned and turned and nothing else happened.
After looking into the distribuitor, I noticed that the black magneto ring was not aligned correctly, and to my surprise, the bottom ring that keeps the magnets in place had come off and three magnets stuck to the distributor, three were still in place.
Seems like the "other" mechanic ain't such a hot shot, after all...
I took the whole damn distributor out and tried to put it together again. I used crazy glue to fix the magnets in place and a compass to align them correctly. These magnets really have a life of their own...
Then I put the ring again on the rotor shaft. I had to reduce the top lip on the black plastic magneto ring in order to push it down on the rotor shaft and to get it aligned with the ignition module (probably a hall sensor).
Then I started the engine and it turned on on the spot. Unfortunately, now there's a crack in the plastic magneto ring. I don't think it would be a mayor problem, since the engine is running just fine, and running the engine even at 4000 rev/min wouldn't stress the plastic enough to disintegrate.
Now, here is my actual question:
Initially, we decided to switch from point ignition to electronic ignition because the engine died all the time (it just turns off when idle) and then turned on right again. We thought that it might be caused by a faulty condenser, and actually, the "engine dying" stopped right after installing the "Hot Spark" Kit. But now it starts dying again. Any idea why this could be happening?
Could this be caused by the magneto ring that got out of alignment due to the crack? Or could it be the carburettor that has been cleaned so many times that it is asking for replacement?
Thanks in advance for your help.
