FJ60 Drivetrain Noise

It’s annoying when you’re searching for answers and find a dead end thread, so here’s an update.

I replaced the t case gears with a good used set from Georg and a new rebuild kit for good measure. No change. Replaced clutch master and slave, thinking it might be a throw out bearing issue. That didn’t work, either.

Finally, while messing around with the bearing preload, I noticed that the rear output flange on the t case rang out when I hit it with a screwdriver. I sprayed some flex seal on the flange to deaden the ring, and now the noise is almost gone.

Since then, it’s been on a 350 mile trip (highway speeds, split up into two days). The t case oil still looks great after the trip and the noise is still minimal. Most would not even notice it.

I don’t know if it is just masking a problem, but with everything in the t case new except for the case housing itself, I’m calling it good.

I have a similar ringing sound under power which goes away when I press in the clutch. Sounds like from same area. I had been in desert and was cleaning undercarriage from crud and mud and thought maybe something lodged itself somewhere.

Dude. this really worked? Someone out there is so freaking proud of this moment right now...

Jokes aside my case does this as well and i always thought it was coming from my idler shaft. It always does it on very light throttle like on cruise control. Did it with my old tcase and also with a brand new oem toyota one

Ha! Yeah, it worked. I actually started with wrapping electrical tape around it, which worked until it inevitably got slung off. Then flex seal came to mind. Again, I don’t know if it’s just covering up another issue, but with all of the parts that were replaced in the t case, I felt pretty confident that it was solid.

That flange is basically a bell. Makes sense to me. Drummers put duct tape under their cymbals to lessen the length of decay so things don’t get too muddy in the mix. Flex seal is doing that permanently.

I always thought it was the driveshaft pinging and ringing out. I’ll have to try the flex seal solution on my rig when I get a chance.
