already painted the marks on the flywheel before and are easy to see -- i pushed the truck to when i seen the piston come up in the 1st spark plug hole pictured -- not real sure if it is up all the way -- thanks for the help

i found this -- is this what i am missing -- im on a up stroke but the first and not the second - could that be

important point here is that the piston is at the top of its stroke twice in a cycle. Once is at the completion of its exhaust stroke. We want the other one, the TDC of the compression stroke

EXACTLY!
Learn something new every day, right on!
So I should have mentioned that. If you use the method where the engine get cranked (not continually, just for quick bursts of a second or so) and someones finger is over the spark plug hole your finger should come shooting off of there because of the compression. That is at the moment that the fuel is compressed right before it is combusted. THAT is the point where you want the piston.

cant get it -- 1st spark plug check turning over engine got air set at tdc after that - still can not adjust dizzy at all to set timing truck only starts in that pic postion low idle - at that - with cut off if i move it - timing light check still cant see any tdc or bb mark -- pic still shows where the rotor lines up when i do it again and again -- please help because around this area no one has these trucks and i dont want anybody messing with the carb or dizzy since its new and come from jim c

double check that your cap is wired correctly. From your picture above it seems OK, except I can't see #3 & #4. Of course check that the wires are going to the correct plugs, too.

You should also try removing the hold down nut so you can rotate the distributor further counter clockwise to see if you can see the timing marks. It could be that you are still a tooth off is getting the distributor set correctly.

And just to confirm, you should be connecting your timing light to the wire that goes to the #1 plug.

Edit: see the note on the FSM procedure. Are you aligning the distributor body as well as the rotor?

oh my gosh -- i got it :bounce: - had the slot for the oil pump - turned just a little little little bit too much - what a shame - took 3 days of morning stress - i thought it had to be something else wrong because from the pics it looked correct -

so remember when the manual says about 20 degrees - the slot down where the dizzy goes will go toward #4 spark plug - not #5 - the manual was dead on but doesnt say what spark plug it points towards just around 20 degrees to the left and follow the rotor diagram also going pointing to the right about 20 degrees (because of the shape of the dizzy gear that engages is why you cant just line it up)- when it catches -- the rotor now will be pointing towards #4 spark plug not #5 or about #4 --

Make sure you are on the correct stroke -

take #1 spark plug out put your finger on the hole (its not going hurt) and have someone click over the engine until you feel air come out of the hole - this will be close to tdc - you have to locate it and may have to push the vehicle in 4th gear until you see tdc it will not be much (you can see the piston near the top watch and see which direction it is going if its moving down you need to go the other direction and you will soon see tdc marks in the window - then you will have to work on getting the dizzy to line up correct - if its off a tooth you probably can start the truck by adjusting the dizzy to one extreme or the other but want be able to adjust it from that point or the truck will cut off - then you know you dont have it in the correct tooth - keep trying --

hope this helps somebody else ------

finally all is good and running smooth no popping when letting the off the gas anymore from this conversion and having the manifolds fixed -- i am hoping they are fixed will see in time i guess - i do here a small clicking noise something other than the valves i think -- the truck feels the same for power i would say but smoother from the pedal and not labored -

thanks for the post - maybe it will help others - not knowing like me about the simple things like how the cap goes on -- but luckly i got that correct this time

Glad to see that you got it. FINALLY, huh? That is how I felt once I finally got things lined up and the thing ran like a champ. Just takes time, patience (which I am short on, ha hah) and just old fashioned figuring things out.

I'm having the same issue. Using this post as my guide..

Curious, what is the "small clicking noise you were referring to? what did it end up being? Anyone know what he was referring to?
