I am in the market for a 60. I want to make sure I am armed with good knowledge when I am looking at these old beasts. Your advice would be much appreciated.
Where are the most common and unseen rust spots.
Is there any common mechanical problems I should watch for?
Is there a "best" year to buy?

Definitely you want to check the frame for rust. If it's rusty RUN FAST!

lol start reading threads. do yourself a favor, since youre in cali buy a 62 "fuel injection" and put 60 head lights on it [: thats the biggest issue with 60's is the smog equipment. stuff likes to leak. causing mass frustration and head aches.... but fxxx they are cool trucks :P

If you're set on an FJ60 I'd get one with the ability to swap in a 5 speed directly. Which are 85's and later. You can check because there will be a "spacer" between the transmission and transfercase.

Rust areas are the rain gutters, the rear quarter panels, the rocker panels, around the bottom of the tailgate, and most of all the frame.

Mechanically on an FJ60 its likely going to need a carb rebuild and a going over of the emissions equipment. And if it has the original exhaust that may need a check up as well.

Happy searching!

Thanx for the advice. A 60 is what I am set on. dont want an automatic. dont want efi. I will only be in cali for a few more months then I return to houston, so I will desmog. Are there specific spots on the frame that rust more than others? some thing specific I should look at ? Excuse my lack of thread reading I am new and SLOWLY figuring out my computer. again thanx

If its going to be a keeper, then be real picky about the rust.
The rear channel near the spare tire is usually the worst frame spot. Take a magnet and check for bondo on the body.

Mine looked good, but the rockers and rear quarters were 1/2 bondo.
Bottom of tailgate. Anywhere near chrome.

From my limited experience, and from talking to others, if you have any rust at all, its just a matter of time.

Mine has rust, but I'll probably break it before the rust gets it.

Also, check the front axle for sludge coming from the knuckles. Not a show stopper but requires some labor.

If its lifted, pay close attention to the steering. Any wobbles, etc could haunt you.

Power Steering gear box/ or pump leaks. Should be obvious, the driver side will be all shiney on the axle/springs.

good luck

Dave

X2 on read the FAQ. These are indeed cool trucks, but they are Old Cool Trucks and have age related issues. Rust is just one of them. 25 year old rubber is hard and stiff and cracked. Rubber seals, rubber suspension components, rubber hoses and rubber diaphragms are all suspect and will most likely need replacing. Most of the parts are still available from Toyota, but can get expensive. As long as you are your own mechanic, you will do OK, but plan on spending several thousand dollars catching up all the maintenance and neglected cosmetic issues before you have a reliable, comfortable and good looking daily driver.
