hi guys i have a 73fj45 with drums all round and have a 84 fj45 parts car with disc brakes just wondering if its an easy swap

Oh yeah, it's very simple. Just send me your front axle and I'll do the swap on my 78. I'll start a thread and take lots of pictures so everyone can see how it's done. Don't forget to send the booster and master too...

;)

I did that several years ago. I used a front axle out of a 83 ??? bj42. The brakes stop real good but I have yet to solve the lack of pressure on the first pump though. The second pump always brings lots of pressure and stopping ability. I used the existing m/c as i had power drum to begin with.

I haven't really pursued the problem too much, I just leave lots of distance between me and the next car/truck. I keep looking here waiting for a solution to just show up.

Now, be thorough and post lots of pics.

I used the existing m/c as i had power drum to begin with.

That's most likely the problem. The m/c maintains a certain amount of residual pressure on the brakes to keep the shoes/pads close to the drums/rotors. The rates of residual pressure and the volume of fluid is different between discs and drums. If you switch to a m/c that's designed for front discs and the problem should go away.

Not to hi-jack, but this is related.

I was told that the residual pressure needed was different but that the current m/c could easily be modified by adding or removing a small ball in the m/c somewhere. My current m/c is original to the '78 truck I have. I will check part number and compare to a disc 40 setup.

Perhaps I'll start looking for a different m/c.
