Hey Guys,

I'm installing a new Pioneer DEH-X5500HD stereo into my 74 FJ40, in the tuffy console. I assume I only need to connect the power and ground wires, and tape off the remaining wires... Is this correct?

I have no amp or sub woofer. I only have two rear speakers. Also, I will be using a rocker switch to power on and off. I have never installed a stereo before and want to make sure I don't screw it up.

Thanks!!!

That would work.
I'd crimp butt splices on the unused wires rather than tape, but that's just me.
You might want to tap your power from the OEM radio plug and skip the rocker switch, the OEM wire will be ACC hot only.

Not being a jerk-just literal. You'll need to connect speakers and antenna, too. I'm guessing you'll only have unused wires for antenna power and four speaker wires, right. I don't use insulated butt splice. I crimp uninsulated butt splice, solder, and then heat shrink. HTH

Anvil,

I'm looking at stereo/amp options too. I'm guessing since you're shopping around for amps they are basically a necessity in a '40. Have you decided on anything yet? And do you have any advice on the installation?

FWIW, I was kind of leaning toward a bluetooth amp, or an amp that I can plug a bluetooth adaptor into, and skipping the head-unit. I would just play music from my phone.

That's what I did; amp under the seat, ipod straight into the amp. Works great.

Which amp did you buy 1911? I picked up some of these speakers a while ago off woot: http://www.amazon.com/Bazooka-MAC6502W-6-5-Inch-Coaxial-Speaker/dp/B0016HREVY?tag=ihco-20

So I would need a 240 watt amp to get the most out of them, right?

Man, it's been in there as long as I've had this truck (5+ years) and I just don't remember. Can't see it without removing my passenger seat either, sorry. It was nothing special though.

My speakers are just rectangular ones, fairly cheapo, clamped to the roll cage. Don't have a photo of them handy.
