I picked up a 1976 FJ40 about two months ago, I bought it sight unseen, and it towed to my mechanic, and he got it operational. I got a pretty good deal on it, but it's not worth putting more money into due to rust and a terrible paint job (truck bed liner poorly applied). I already have a 1979 FJ40 along with a 1990 60 series and a 2003 100 series, my '79 is in much better shape so I don't mind hacking on the 'new' one.

I took the roof off yesterday, I pretty much had to use force as 50% of the heads broke off due to rust (taking off by hand w/ socket) and the frame where the roof connects having some seriously eaten out areas. I still have my windows, doors, and side panels on. back and side glass is in good condition and doors are surprisingly good condition compared to everything else (except for the spray on bed liner).

The plan is to take everything off, put in half doors and a bikini top, rattle can some of the places the 'paint job' is missing, and it will be something I cruise around in during the spring/summer and not worry about beating it up. Not a show piece by any means, but still fun to drive and I can always get my money out of it if need be.

My question, what do I need to baby step around when I'm taking off the remaining items? I'm interested in selling what I take off as I don't want to store it and it will never go back on once taken off. Between the bolts being rusted and painted over multiple times, it's almost impossible not to strip the heads when taking things off.

Post pictures but as a rule most usable parts on a 40 are in demand and even stuff you don't consider salvageable maybe needed by others with the other half of the part so to speak

Here are a few pictures, not a ton of time as I'm heading out the door.

The diamond plate on the bottom of the hard top doesn't bode well; bet there's rust underneath. Someone is always looking for a hard top though; might be worth something, but I don't know what. The doors will always be worth something if they're not rusted out. Same with the rear amby doors.

There is a little bit of rust everywhere on this vehicle, some places are really bad, some aren't terrible at all. I'm about $2,800 into it right now with purchase price, new brakes, fluids, and it is running/idling perfect. My thoughts, if I can get it road worthy (bikini top, half tailgate in back, new windshield, seats) for $3,500 - $4,000 than I'll be happy.

All the door parts including the inside panel (especial since they are not cut out for speakers).
The doors look to be rust free. If that is the case stripping the bed liner off would be something a lot of people would be willing to do.

Have you tried attempting to tighten the bolts just a touch? Sometimes breaking a bolt loose is more successful if you try and tighten them first.
