FJ shopping - 6 manual or Auto?

My wife and I love the 6 speed, 2 years and counting. Three weeks ago on the Rubicon, last week in San Francisco, whereever, its great, its fun and it enhances the driving experience. Don't settle for an auto if you can get a 6 speed.

All depends on what you like. I don't like something doing the shifting for me...ours has the 6-speed and i love it. I wheel it and am so used to shifting my own gears i don't notice the extra work when crawling, maybe if i'd wheeled a auto more i'd notice. JMO

I have had a couple AWD vehicles in the past that used a viscous coupler system. What I didn't like about them was that it was critical that all four tires had equal wear so that the front and rear tires were rotating at the same speed or the coupler would always be locking up and could damage the vehicle on non slippery surfaces like dry pavement (like driving a part-time 4WD in 4wd mode all the time on dry pavement).

Is the AWD of the FJ like this or does it have a center differential or other technology that prevents this problem? I would prefer the manual 6speed for the fun of it, but would definately go auto for teh part-time 4wd if that is the case.

The 6MT has a Torsen center differential like 80 and 100-series Land Cruisers.

Correction: the FJC does have a Torsen centre diff, but the 100 has an open centre and the 80 has a viscous coupler.

I think the only 2 +'s for the manual are right arm exersize and it keeps young kids from stealing it because they cant drive it. I think id be looking at the 4 door rubi this year, if you can get the price down... my fj is like driving by periscope and toyota dealer service has been worse than terrible on my end. While Im still waiting for toyota to officially say my early rear ring is perfect I have been driving my dodge pick up and feel like im riding in a fish bowl....... wow if i turn my head there are cars that are not directly in front of me or in my mirrors..
