Ok, fire away, I'd like all your opinions on the best and/or cheapest center consoles for a BJ, with rear heater, 1980. Am I better off making one? Or can I find a quality one reasonably priced? Pros and cons of different consoles?

Any help would be appreciated....

Tuffys seem to be the most popular - very well built.

x2 for the Tuffy. Get the one with the radio box and cup holders...very nice. I really enjoy mine.

has anyone ever fitted one of the tuffy console over the heater?

I just purchased a CCOT Console and it is very nice, easy to install and fits very nicely between the front seats. The only thing I do not like about it is the stereo is mounted in the main compartment so that everytime you want to change the song or adjust the volume you have to lift the lid and then try to balance the lid, drive, and try to figure out which button to hit without creaming everyone while you are driving 65 MPH!

My other cruiser came with a Tuffy box in it and it was great! Seperate stereo den! I do not know about instilation though?

CCOT's Console Mounting Bracket
Fits FJ40 - 10/'73 to 12/'78 w/factory bucket seats & seat frames.

CCOT's New and Improved FJ40 Tuffy Console Mounting Bracket. Made of STRONG 14 gauge steel. New design allows passage of heater hoses to rear heater for clean look and easy installation. Bracket mounts quickly to the bottom of FJ40 Consoles (#023 & #024) and bolts to factory seat rail and floor. Slotted bolt holes make for easy and adjustable fit / installation. Powder coated. This is a nice product designed to look clean and fit.

The one w/ the stereo den is the way to go! It's sweet.

My buddy has the Tuffy posted above. Very nice unit and very practical. My only complaint is that it sits kind of high and sometimes I whack my elbow on it.

I have a Tuffy with the radio console in my '80 and I like it, except that I had to bend the shift arm forward a little bit to avoid bashing my hand every time I shift into second. Personally I really wish it was about 2" shorter to give some extra clearance. Haven't found anything better though. Also, if you get a Tuffy, for an '80 be sure to order the late model mounting kit. It's different from the earlier ones.

i have the tuffy console and really like it. very well made, and i ordered an extra cup holder for another $20.00 so my rear passengers have a place for cups. i had to bend my shifter too, but because it hit my coffee mug in second gear. and as far as rear heater i just added a few washers to raise it up a bit. here's the only interior pic i have. its mounted to a home built frame though, but it did come with a bracket from tuffy for the heater hoses to pass through.
