I've been considering putting FJ 55 springs, flipped, on the rear of my 40. And going SOA. I guess I'll need to go for stock spings on the front unless there's a better option. What's the best source for new aftermarket springs? ???

FJ55 front Springs are 550mm I 550mm. :slap:
FJ55 rear Springs are 600mm I 600mm. :slap:

Check with CCOT for aftermarket/stock height, and with SOR....you'll want 2 pairs of rear packs....

yeah, like j-fu said,

55 springs are center pinned, so no need to flip.

I remember that now. already had hammerhead do a spring flip on the rear, so I have my fenders done already in preparation.

Didn't know I needed two pairs though.

Thanks guys!

it's up to you how many you want or what setup.

i'm plannin on keepin the stock ones up front when i SOA. i'll flip em and do an SR.

got some 55 rears a couple weeks ago from a guy on the board.

post up in the wanted section and see what you can get.

I don't have a complete set of stock front springs anymore. I think hammerhead took the best leafs from both of ours to build a primo set for his when he went SOA. As long as I have to scrounge up a set of leafs, I might as well set my sights on FJ55 springs.

yeah,

tru dat, you'll just end up like woody.

If the '55 spring is centered then the spring is longer? I can't see-in my minds eye any way-how they'll fit on the front. Won't they extend out beyond the frame? Or, if you reposition, then where does the axle end up compared to stock?
By the way, I want to go SR up front. How does that work? Is there a thread on this, or a tech article I'm missing?

yeah, you have to move/make some new mounts. for either front or rear.

i thought it moved it around 4 inches, but i can't remember exactly.

ask woody, he'd know

FJ55 front is 550 I 550 = 1100mm
40 front is 502 I 603 = 1105mm
550 - 502 = 48mm(1.88") Is how much the Axle will move forward

FJ55 rear is 600 I 600 = 1200mm
40 front is 502 I 603 = 1105mm
600 - 502 = 98(3.85") Approach Angle :-* Also require Bracket relocation.

Use FJ55 rear spring packs at all 4 corners. Rear axle ends up 3.5" back from stock location, basically reverse the stock shackle hanger and lengthen yer driveshaft.

Front axle with shackle reversal allows you to push the hanger to the end of the bumper and "set" your wheelbase to what you want..mine is 1" foward of stock at the centerpin, and I then move my axle 1.5" forward of stock by redrilling the spring pad and the u-bolt plate. Prior to the 4-link, I was 96". (2.5" front, 3.5" rear - 90" is stock) DO recess the shackle bushings into the frame to help keep height down.

I appreciate all the advice. So far on the 'net All I have found are FJ 55 hvy duty rear springs with stated 2"-2.5" lift. These springs have 7 leafs.
Are they too hvy? Is that too much lift?
Can I remove leafs to "lighten" them up? (IIRC I'm supposed to remove 1 leaf to put stock '55 springs on the rear of the '40)
Can I raise the shackle bushing location high enough to compensate?

I have an inquiry out to Alcan for an estimate.

check with CoolCruisers too, they might have some, or the 60-series rears are "almost" identical.

Alcan gave me a ballpark estimate of $210 per pair. I like the idea of custom built springs. How does that sound to you guys. Do I want them built for my FJ40 or to FJ55 specs?
