Just throw a tow strap around the rear bumper- that's what I do.

Is that not safe?

Not really. What you want to do is go get a cheap generic tow hook. Drill 2 holes in the bottom of the frame. You want to use some kind of backing plate where the nuts would go. I'm not quite sure, but that's what I've been told. I managed to find a kind of sideways tow hook. I heard that they came on 62's, but I've never seen another like it

Stock bumpers are pretty much tin foil. Doesn't take much to mangle them.

Not a very good pic, but all I got right now.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but why would a tow hook with only two points of attachment be better than wrapping a bumper that has what, 4 or 6 points of attachment? That bumper seems to be made of pretty stout stuff!

I also don't have a tow hook on the front of my rig anymore. Looks like the PO removed it when installing the smitty built front bumper.

I just wrap the front bumper too if I need to be pulled out.

I'm going to catch up on matenance items, then regear (4.10) and lock, then lift and tires.

I'll never be on the trail at night, so I don't need lights......(incoming...)

Well, you might never INTEND to be on thetrail at night, but sh*t happens. Lights are cheap.

It's pretty easy to rip stock bumpers off, ask me how I know ;) . I've got 2 1/2" grade 8 bolts holding the hook to the frame. The bumper is held on by like 8 carriage bolts. These bolts are actually rather easy to pull through the bumper holes, and who knows what grade they are. What happens if you get stuck, and need to be winched out? If you wrap the winch cable around the bumper back onto itself (which is a no no in the first place), it'll probably pull your bumper off before it budges you.

I'm not trying to be argumentitive either. I've just seen some recovery efforts which were rather scary, due to missing or incorrect recovery points. It's easily solvable.

Here's my order:

1) New Frame
2) New suspension (still deciding-- leaning toward OME heavy duty, possible with Shackle reversal or SOA)
3) New Rocker panels, rear door sill doglegs, quater panel patch pieces, outer wheel wells (front and rear) all four doors (got two for free, yipee!) new hood (free!) new rear hatch (free! but thinking of ambulance door conversion)
4) 12HT turbo diesel with h55t 5 speed. All hoses Aeroquip.
5) Air lockers
6) 33" tires (haven't decided on brand yet)
7) Front and rear bumpers with winch and recovery equipment, jerry can holders, tire rack
8) Snorkel
9) Roof rack
10) lighting upgrades
11) Interior
12) aux fuel tank (still debating whether or not that should be a vegetable oil tank)
13) 200 amp generator, AC inverter/Under hood welder (From premier power welder -- the fine folks that brought you the under hood shower kit. (no kidding!)

And I'm sure I'll get more ideas as time goes by....

Hey your Dudeship, what do those XML's really up measure at? My 37" MTR's are 36" tall.

TB

the backs are 38.5 and the fronts 38. I would guess new tires would be around 39 or better.

Once again, after the comp[lete tune up I would take a hard look at the headlight upgrade...everybody that drives my trucks with them can't believe how nice it is.

and tow points, I like the hooks or shackles (or pintle) as they tend to be WAY easier then wrapping the bumper and in my experience you tend to wreck less straps. (ever asked a buddy to strap a bumper???)

Hey thanks for all the input guys. I'll prolly go for towpoints then lift/tires or sliders or bumper.... I have no idea. It's really hard for me to part with my money.

When I buy a FJ60, the first thing I will do is replaced the sealed beam headlights with Hella e-codes, I love those things, they produce great light even when they are wore out and the reflectors are pitting.

Check your suspension first. If it's good, then start with the bumpers. If you want to go big on the first go around, swap up to a 5-speed transmission.
