.....on the body anyways.

A few hardy souls ventured up to Eagle Ridge after the 4WDABC AGM this afternoon. I was a little excited, as I have not been up there for awhile, and it would be the first actual 'wheeling the 81 has seen aside from a couple mild camping trips last summer.
I grabbed the kids back at home, and away we went. Steve Dillen in his YJ was leading the pack, who consisted off all Herd of Turtles members I think.
A couple other Jeeps (tj's I guess?), a suzuki, and a spanky new 4runner and a new Tacoma quadcab as well.
Unfortunatley out of all the vehicles, the 2 new 'yotas had the most trouble. They were both nicely accessorized, but lacked lockers, which where a blessing as we ran into some very wet snow.
I would have been screwed 3 or 4 times I think if not for my magic switch, but a quick twist of the dial, and I pretty much walked up most of the obstacles.
We got perhaps only halfway to the lake, and by this time I somehow was in the lead and breaking trail. But the snow just got too deep and I was just plowing my way forward. We turned around and headed back, and I think somewhere along the way back down is where the crushed rocker happened. It was on my drivers side, and I had my head hanging out the window on all the hard parts, but I never saw it happen.
I didn't take any pictures I'm sorry, but there should be lots up soon on BC4x4 and the H.O.T. site.
I better make a trip out to the 'whack and get those sliders on before my 81 has as many dents as my 45.

Hey Greedy! You already have enough of them. If anyone needs a free/cheep one, its moi. At least Jeff would be sure it would not be posted for sale in a year. ;p

Hey Jeff,

Yeah, it looks like it is time for some sliders... Oops, I mean its a little too late!

Say the word and I'll start fabbin' a set up for you. At least it will prevent any further carnage.

IMO, local is always better than mail order if it's in the same price range.
Rock Sliders - Rocker Protection

I checked these out... A pretty smokin' deal as long as you're willing and able to do the hardest part of the fab work in mounting sliders to an 80: Mounting them to the frame. If you need to pay someone to do that part for you, then the gap starts to narrow between buying those for $175 and having a bunch of work to do, or buying mine (or any of the other makes that are built for an 80) and having them bolt right on. Not trying to tell anyone what to do, just that you get what you pay for.

Here's what a nearly finished one looks like that I have made.

URWIS II - a set on Flickr

HERE ARE JASON'S SLIDERS INSTALLED ON MY TRUCK.
IT IS A PERFECT FIT. THANKS JASON!
FOR ANYBODY WHO WANTS A PAIR AND DOES NOT DO THEIR OWN FABRICATION, THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST DEAL...
WE USED ONE OF THESE SLIDERS TO PUT MY TRUCK BACK ON ITS WHEELS AFTER MY FLIP OVER, TWO WINCHES WERE ATTACHED TO IT.

FYI. POWDER COATING WAS $125, DONE AT

So no frame drilling? What is there to prevent the slider from sliding along on the frame, aside from the friction from the 3 clamps (if one was to fall off a ledge, hook some part of that assembly on an immovable object, with 6 kips of force going the other way)

Hmmm... That's an interesting thought. On the right side I use 4 existing holes where the forward most exhaust mount is, so that ones not going anywhere. On the other side I suppose it could shift, but it won't go far either way before one of the brackets contacts a suspension hanger or body mount. If falling off cliffs is a major concern for you I could probably work something into the design:D

Thanks for the props Marcin

From one of Marcins photo's, it does look like the support is close to a control arm hanger, just hard to tell from the angle of the photo.
I had just assumed there was frame drilling involved, I've never looked too closely at any sliders before and how they were actually mounted.

From what I've seen the most common slider attachments are bolt on brackets like I use, or welded on. I can't think of any that involve frame drilling. I'm not a big fan of the idea of welding to the frame, so that's why I did the brackets the way I do. I also like that they keep a low profile where they wrap under the frame so they won't tend to hang up on stuff.
