What is the best way to line up the gears on an sm420 tranny. I am putting the top back on it and want to make sure I do it right. is there a link where I can find this info?

Eh? I don't understand what you want to 'line up'?
To get the top cover on, I think the tranny has to be in neutral and you just carefully place the top on making sure the shift forks get into the right slots on the gears. Put a couple bolts in and make sure it shifts into all gears before you get too far...

Also make sure you have the reverse lever lined up.
