Very cool, thanks for posting!

The last time I looked at the Lilliput 7" touchscreens they going for around $300. Do you mind sharing what you paid for that one?

I plan on a carputer for the 80 one of these days. A friend sent me this link the other day and got me thinking about it again. Newegg.com - ZOTAC NF630I-F-E LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7100 Mini ITX WIFI Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

What are you doing for a case? Did you mount it under the driver's seat?

I just noticed the 200 gigs of music. Is that all in lossless format or what?

Where did you mount the external HD???

external hd is super small. I just plug it in the usb and let it sit on top of the closed laptop. it has rubber feet that seem to keep it in place.

The screen actually would fit perfect in the Double Din slot. A lot of people take the monitors apart and building all kinds of crazy flush mounts for them.

Does anybody know of applications like streetdeck but freeware? I don't feel like paying $99 for it. I buy professional photography software for $200 so paying 100 bucks for a fun toy seems a little bit too much. I've summed up all possible expenses and it is really uite a lot...

- screen $160
- software $99
- computer $200 at least
- I still need a deck as an amplifier $150
TOTAL: $609

I can have similar functionality if I buy an Eonon double din player. Early models were problematic but the newest ones are said to be absolutely OK. And they cost around $300 shipped. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, just type 'eonon' on Ebay.

Don't get me wrong. I am a computer maniac and I've always deamed of having a carputer, but the prices of the components still seem to be quite high.

Awesome to know I think my list of projects just got longer
I would want to put it in the double din slot but have it so I can take it out also..... break ins to steal car radios or LCD type radios out of cars seems to be going up around here.

Why would you need to spend $200 on the computer??.... laptops with cracked screens can be had for cheap.

I've seen the Eonon ads before on ebay but haven't seen one yet that lists GPS in what it can do. Also what would you load the topo maps to would it be compatable?? Your idea soulds good also but i've always heard bad reviews about the Eonons and haven't seen an ad with gps included yet.

I have been interested in purchasing a navigation system for some time now, and have more music than any ipod could hold. (about 200gbs) I decided to look into installing a carputer in my new 80. For about half the cost of a new ipod/garmin, I was able to get it done. I am running a program called Streetdeck, allowing me to access my music, gps, videos and dvds... via a 7" touch screen monitor. Also has ability for, XM radio, backup camera, obd2 diagnostics, Internet. I will get to work on these soon enough. Setup was super easy, fused line to a relay that powers both the under the seat laptop and touchscreen. Sound runs through a cable into the back aux input of my head unit. I will get some more pics up soon.

That's a pretty sweet set up!

Thanks for posting and please keep us posted with your future modifications/additions!

I have a eee pc that I use in my trucks with a cellular card for internet.

I am looking for a mount but the eee 1000h works well for work or music for the truck.

I really like the menu navigation via hand gestures - great for while driving instead of trying to first see and then hit some small spot on the screen. Is the hand gesture version shown in the video available now in Streetdeck, or is that something coming in the future?

You have done an excellent job and thanks for sharing you knowledge on building a carputer.

Couple of questions:
For those of us with old eyes we need a screen that can be seen from the driver seat during the daytime (think bright NM skies and lotsa sun). Will the Liliput do the job?

Do you need additional airflow for the laptop? Is the noise distracting?

How far from the laptop can you mount the Liliput? I am thinking the cargo area might be where the carputer would go, then run video cables to the front row. Do you think that would work?

Have you played with any topo map apps in your configuration?

Thanks again and post up your experience in using that application.

That's gonna depend on the laptop. A beefier one will get hotter and need more cooling, which means more noise.

If you run sound from the box to the front, you'll likely get some noise in it due to the length of the run. That would be my primary concern.

topo maps will work fine in streetdeck. streetdeck has an option for "external apps" that will pull up your topo map within streetdeck. The main navigation that it uses in the video above is microsoft streets and maps. the only problems with viewing the screen i have had is with polorized sunglasses on. when the sun is bright i keep my moonroof cover closed. noise and heat have not been an issue for me at all. some people have complained of getting alternator whine in the sound system, but that has been due to poorly insulated audio cable, i have pretty high quality audio cables and the sound is better than my cd player. mounting the computer in the rear is no problem. you would need extensions or long cables to anything in the rear such as USB's, Audio, Power cables and the monitor VGA cable. Lots of people mount the computer in their trunk.

If money is not an issue, the following is by far the most efficient set up. The top din is the touchscreen and the bottom din is the cpu/amp/cd player. I paid $400 or so to do my setup but if I had a little more to spend. This Lilliput combo is what I would have gone for, I find it to be the best solution for an 80 series land cruiser. Here is the link to buy, do some more web searching and you can find it for $700.

The Streetdeck in the video is version 1, exactly what I am running. All features you see apply. I have the option to upgrade for free to v2 but choose not to for one reason. In v1 and v2, you can not access videos or enter navigation addresses while in motion, based of the gps speed. However I have figured out how to disable this saftey feature with version one. It cant be disabled in version 2.
