If the lense cover is clean you get incredibly clear crisp footage. When mounted on my roof rack with their tube mount I get some pretty crappy sound, even with the skeleton backing. I think something is rattling around in my rack though. Nothing they can do about that.
I have a ~4 yr old iMac and editing the videos can be a chore just because the files are so damn huge. But then again that's how you get the great clarity.

so far my gopro black has been good i like being able to see and control the video with my phone. the battery time sucks order some backup from ebay there cheep.
but a buddy of mine dropped his and that was the end of it luckily gopro was able to warranty it with the copy of the recipe.
there defiantly not as strong as the contour i could beat the crap out of that thing all day long.

I got the sony action cam. Pretty good, took it with me on my trip to Europe. Check out the reviews on YouTube. It's like 200 dollars brand new, about half the price of a gopro.

Can you use the underwater housing for extra protection - dirt, mud and the occasional branch smacks ?

I don't know about an underwater cover, but mine came with a hard case with two different "back doors", for lack of a better description. One is completely sealed and the other has two large open slots, supposedly for better sound. I also got the battery backpack for mine (HERO 2). With the battery backpack came a set of larger "back doors" to accommodate the extra size. I imagine you got a HERO 3, which is probably streets ahead of my older version. But yes, for mine the cases provide lots of protection. It's also required to mount the camera to anything. At least on mine, the camera has no mounting provisions. The camera sits in the case and case mounts to what-have-you.

Lower quality edited video I made a couple of years ago. As I've mentioned before, I will not apologize for the Buckethead.
It would help if you said which go pro you are getting, but I had a go pro 3 black edition now I only have a 3+ black edition with wicked video from both I like the case for the 3 way more than the 3+. I beat the hell out of it mine has done tough mudder, scuba, roller coasters, been strapped to a stick for the dog. Um for vehicle ditch the stock mount and get the ram mounting system. Dont ever expect good sound put your video to music.

it was in the waterproof case and was dropped from just over waste height.
jeff the contour battery lasts a lot longer.
Ok ran it on Sat. again up V-rock etc. it's approx 250MB per min of video, I have 3 64G cards minimum, Glenn what I do on long trips say 2 weeks in mexico I buy a few extra cards from future shop and leave them in the package just in case don't use'em return them. you will need the fastest cards if you wanna run video higher then 1080

I will have a 32 GB stick to transfer to, but I need more as you suggest.
I imagine once you realize how large the files are, how long they take to transfer from card to computer to stick and back, plus how long they take to load into your video editor (I use iMovieHD) and how long it takes to edit and convert files and how much storage they consume, you'll be a bit selective about what you record.
I found I just didn't have the room or the desire to buy another external drive to store any of the footage from my Redwoods trip, for example. The scenery just didn't make the cut.

Just depends how crazy you want to get. I've been pretty happy editing movies using Windows Movie Maker that comes pre-packaged with Windows 7, and uploading to YouTube. Works pretty good and doesn't take a whole 'lotta time...again depending on what you want and how much free time you have...........

Where has the cheapest 64GB mini SD cards?
I can tell you last August I found a hero 3 in waterproof case attached to a pole washed under a log jam while on a job on the local river. Case had a good layer of green scum on the outside, joints on the collapsible pole were a bit rusty. Camera was bone dry. Plugged it in and looked through the photos on it. Ended up finding out it belonged to a local guy using it to video his fishing trips. It had been submerged in the river for months. Good thing for him there were photos on the card or I'd still have a gopro...
