I've had an '86 22r truck for 15-20 yrs that's been completely reliable, as we'd expect. It's completely stock (well it's got a celica engine &
rv cam, but she's run beautifully for years with that, I just put that engine in because of coolant loss (#1 exhaust port casting issue?))
It starts up fine (well, the float bowl drains overnight, whats that about? I neutered my AAP years ago, and I think that's the only place that's below the level in the bowl) but the choke/fast idle aspect works perfectly.
Once it's half warmed up, it starts acting up. It'll stumble starting out, and driving up the slightest grade with a constant throttle causes mass stuttering. My main accelerator pump appears to be working, and in this situation if I jab the throttle, nothing really happens. Once it's completely warmed up, it's slightly better, but there's still that lack of steady, strong firing.
So, I thought perhaps my ignition module became frail after 26 years, and made a lovely installation of the famous gm hei 4-pin module. No spark! I had .3v from my pickup coil cranking, and if I used a flashlight battery to trigger the module, it could spark 1/2", or throw a continuous arc if I rubbed the jumper around.
So I guess I've got more than one question for you much-appreciated, mud-hating cats...
-Is it possible for a marginal ignition to show these symptoms; misfire with leaner mixture...I haven't got a ton of data to relate it to humidity or temperature. I think my diz cap & wires, plugs are fine, but I can check again.
-Meanwhile, there's thousands that installed the 4-pin module with varying success, so any comments on that are most welcome.
-Meanwhile, I don't really understand the aisan 'power valve/piston, or the metering rod for that matter. I took the top off the carb, nothing major floating in the bowl, blew threw everything I could see, all clear.
-So after fiddling with landrovers and TR3s in my youth, I'm quite embarassed by not being able to figure if my problem is fuel or spark, and I can't afford an ignition scope!
-But it's probably ignition, aside from the carb draining thing that
doesn't relate to the driving glitches, and I'll try to get my 4-pin functional.
Thanks, eh (I'm in vancouver, canada)
