I put a set of these tires on my '04 LX after an extensive search for AT tires that would fit my budget and driving style. Total cost was $843 out the door, mounted and balanced, from a large regional tire chain. I'm running 275/70 18's on stock wheels.
I got turned onto the Falkens after reading some rave reviews from the Taco and Tundra guys. The Wildpeak AT3's currently sport the deepest tread depth of any comparable AT tire on the market. I was looking for something that would a) handle deep, wet, heavy snow in urban conditions that I often face in southeast Michigan winters, b) handle light wheeling and deep snow covered back roads in northern Michigan, c) have good road manners for daily driving situations, d) fit my budget of around $900, and e) look bad ass. The Wildpeaks appear to have checked all those boxes.
Short term review:
I have about 2000 miles of mixed driving on these tires over the last couple of months. Here are my observations.
Urban/pavement. Daily commuter driving: They ride smooth, straight and true. There's a bit of additional road noise as compared to the General HTS light truck tires they replaced but nothing outrageous. Even at highway speeds the ride is great and the noise is moderate. In wet pavement, heavy rain conditions the tires really shine. Although the tread pattern is deep and aggressive, it's also siped nicely no seems to funnel rain water away superbly. Traction andgrip remain excellent.
Urban winter driving conditions: these are the conditions I was really looking forward to driving in. (See photo) One word- amazing. I drove about 125 miles round trip on I75 the other day in terrible driving conditions- basically dead nuts in the middle of a 28- hour winter storm warning. . 6-7 inches of fresh, heavy wet snow on unplowed and unsalted freeways. Saw no less than a dozen wrecks in those 125 miles. All I can say is I felt invincible. These tires truly dominated the snow. The heavy, slushy transitions between lanes offered next to no resistance. Traction was amazing. I've driven thousands of miles in conditions like these and have never felt anything quite so confidence inspiring. My 80-series with the excellent Michelin LTX's was unstoppable in this type of snow, but i have to say the Wildpeak/100 - series combo is even better.
Deep off-road snow: I took the LX off road a bit to test out the tires in untracked moderately deep snow. In 7-8" of wet snow the truck just walked right through like it was nothing. As far as I can tell ATRAC never engaged, the truck just plain crushed the snow. These tires appear to eat snow for breakfast. Im pretty blown away.
Mud: untested
Sand/dirt off-road: untested
