A guy I know has offered me first dibs on an early 90's regular bed pickup 4X4 with the 22RE. It has a couple dings on the tailgate, tailgate mechanism needs fixing, but very little-if any- rust. 175K and apparently needs new headgasket. He keeps feeding it coolant rather than fixing it. It hasn't been offroaded and seems fairly tight. So, is the headgasket a pita and what would be a fair price? Thanks.

If money was no object, they are the best truck, just get it.

HG bad? dont fret what you would be buying is a drive train with 175k on it  that would be worth allot to me.

Do the HG right and you wont have to worry about what will fail next, ie, do tear it down, do NOT worry about the "pita" aspect it will reward what you put into it, PERIOD. Don't cut corners.

I get my heads redone for $100, you can view the cylinder walls at that time and make your decision on weather or not the block needs attention. Low miles + still running, to me would = less likely

I'd get it, hard to answer you question exactly though...

The way I determine worth is this:

Body condition? Worth x

Drive train? Worth x

wheels/ tires? worth x

if you assume the vehicles worth as a whole you could possibly not wind up with it.

This is based however on keeping it not as a flip.

Get the truck. I miss mine so bad :crybaby: 20mpg and THE MOST dependable 4cyl motor ever put into a superior build quality 4WD.

What are your wrench skills?

Without being able to see and drive the truck, I would throw out $1000 as the MAX I would pay for it. Depends on your location and the availability of toyota pick ups though, here in CA they are plentiful. Head gasket is not that big a deal if you can do your own work, a shop would charge a lot to do it though. If you feel you can tackle the head gasket, go for it. 22RE is a great engine and if you are up to fixing it yourself you can probably get a really good deal on it.

I'm not very experienced- water pumps, radiators and brakes is pretty much it.
Thanks for the input. The owner is under the impression that a shop wouldn't charge more than $500 for the HG, but he's not mechanically inclined and I believe it would probably be more than that around here.

 yeah, sounds like a qualified response. FYI round here for my 91 22RE 4WD quotes for just the TC replacement was $900 and $1,000 from the 2nd, now at this time I was super wrench (am still not to this day) needless to say for a $50 piece I did not get a 3rd.....Man up 1, and 2 its all a learning experience we are here to help see the FAQ and get the truck :D . One things for sure you will never learn how to do a HG unless you do it.
