Bombing certain countries doesn't work.Just ask George.

probably the same boat im in. were the cats you replaced still the oem's? which cats did you use to replace at what cost?

doesnt CDan offer them for 200/pair? i'll have to look into that. hoping the sensors are still OK and its just the cats...

on a happier note..gas just hit 146.8 here in fletwood. woohoo!

I had it done at Hoegler Muffler in Richmond. These guys have been around for at least 30 years. The most affordable cats they could find were through Lordco or Napa, who ever they deal with. Toyota was not a cost effective option. The problem is the cats have to be cut off and the new ones have to be welded on. We couldn't find any clamp on type. I have noticed quite an improvement in mileage with the new cats along with added power if that makes sense. I have added apprx. 30-40 miles per tank and the truck runs way smoother. I am running 285's and getting on average of 260 miles before the fill light comes on. I hope to improve that with the part time kit and a new O2.

As for O2 sensors, I haven't looked too much into it other than Toyota and Lordco are way too much. Man-A-Fre carries them at a far better price.

If we are on that topic, I am seriously looking into getting a trailer, throwing on a tank and filling up on marked diesel to later throw into my truck. There has to be a way of making this price hike stop (other then bombing certain countries).

For marked diesel all you need to do is put a FARM VEHICLE decal on it.

thanks for the info Vanny. picked up the cruiser from vantrans yesterday. for $179, i was pretty much told what i assumed...new 02 (front specifically) was needed, as well as new cats. good thing for the interweb, as i was able to source out a pair of oem plug in 02's for 220 shipped to my door, as well as a pair of magnaflow cats (the non-spun standard series) for about $130 shipped to my door.

that should sort out my air care numbers. if it doesnt..i'll just add some alcohol, pass, and hopefully air care will have f'd off by next year.

gonna see if i can try to do an up & over on the exhaust too. hopefully getting my sliders mounted up after wont be a problem.

getting 260 miles/tanks..yikes. is that corrected for the 285's? i get an average of corrected 275 miles on 315's. i do 90% hwy though. hopefully after these new parts and better emissions, i should be able to hit 300 if not more...

thanks for the help guys!

Not corrected for the tire size. I think you can add about 10-13% for that. As I said. We drive almost all city. I am hoping the new O2 will help if I ever get the thing. I am ordering through Man-A-Fre. What a pain in the ass. I have to fill out more paper work for them than for a passport application. Maybe they've dealt with a bunch of dishonest Canadians befor. PM me the link where you got your O2's. Thanks.

havent ordered them yet, but they're from sparkplugs.com. theyve got the direct replacement denso's front & rear for my 97. clip in connector w/ gaskets...no splicing. they ship to canada via USPS, so that means no raping by ups for brokerage fees. they should have direct fit replacements for the 94's too i'd imagine.

Are you able to order from their Canadian site or do you have to do it from their US site? Don't know why, but my glow plugs are only available on their US site. Perhaps it is because of UD Truck only being in the US. Anyways, they are way cheaper than any other supplier in Canada.

Just a heads up since I don't see it addressed in this thread; the 93-94 FZJ80s had side-by-side cats with both O2 sensors mounted ahead of the cats. The 95+ FZJ80 has two cats in series with an O2 sensor at each end.

I suspect that removing one cat - alone - won't create such high numbers. I'm not even convinced it would trigger a CEL. I could be wrong, however. It's just my $0.02.

What I would look at as well as the O2 sensors is the VSV regulator and valve, as they are notorious for clogging and throwing codes.
Double-check all your vacuum lines, plastic fittings, and so-forth. As I understand it, a clog will cause you to run a little rich, which could be part of the problem you have with excess particulates.

My VSV regulator is sort-of clogged, but a replacement is over $400 from Mr. T. I'm going to try bathing mine in an ultrasonic to see if that will get some of the carbon build-up out of it.

Of course out here on the Rock there's no AirCare, so my cats are taking a few years off and resting in my garage.

If you know anyone at an airport or want to just approach a maintenance business, the product that removes carbon on turbine engines is called "turco". It is used for compressor washes. You could soak the part in a coffee can with this stuff for a day or so. Might dissolve all the carbon nicely. An ultrasonic bath in this stuff would be excellent. Or a bath in methel ethel keytone. Spelling not accurate. Any small aircraft business could do that for you. They ultrasonic clean their fuel injectors that way.

doubledown i think you found my aircare saga threads in the 80 section from a few years ago. i repaired/replaced everything emission related but the cats first, then replaced the cats with rebuilt oem cats at which point i barely passed. two years later I failed. luckily i was about to move out of vancouver so i just registered the vehicle at my new location. i think the problem is the aircare standard is too high for the 80 series. compare the average pass rate and the maximum allowance on your aircare sheet. they are only a small ways apart.

mostly do what ironyuppy said. fix the egr first using the 80 series tech faqs as a guide. replace the vacuum hoses. the vsv switch from cruiserdan is about $60 and the egr valve itself is about $130. the modulator can be bad with a leaky diaphram even if you clean the filter. that is another $40.

then do the methyl hydrate trick and take aircare to see how close you are. post up your results.

if all that fails, then spend money on cats. it is a big gamble to go aftermarket. they go cheap on the precious metals and our trucks are close to the pass line on HC even with factory cats. my experience is they will not last you two aircares.

thanks for the reply semlin. aircare standards too high for 80 series cruisers..hmm. not very reassuring news. dan @ vantrans said my CEL code was P0401. insufficient flow. he cleaned it out, and managed to get it working properly. i've yet to have the CEL come back since. he recommended i change my cats & O2's.

im getting mac's downpipe/cat/O2 setup out of his 40th..and see what happens. i thought about going with the cheapie magnaflow's..but for $50 each, i doubt i will get much life out of them. i'll put in the oem setup, then see what happens. if i fail by a little bit, i'll do the methyl hydrate trick. if i fail by alot..., then i'll just register my truck in nelson. or i can just go steal a pair since thats all the rage these days

:flipoff2: aircare

A common cause of failure can be a blockage of the EGR tube into the intake. A tip about this on a forum and fine piece of wire saved me big bucks on changing out the EGR on our old van.

Methylhydrate is a gasser's aircare angel. It even got the smokey old Tercel through with a very nice passing grade (that and reconnecting that silly little vacuum line from the thermostat). :D But if your NO2 is high, i have heard it can complicate it even further.
