I used chemical stripper to remove a couple layers of paint from fenders and bib. I was expecting to see shiny metal or at least kind of shiny metal. I used the stripper, plastic putty knife and a pressure washer. It was pretty easy to get the paint off but there is what looks like a gray primer underneath, not shiny metal. It seems to be impervious to the stripper and pressure washer. I get shiny metal if I scratch the surface with a screwdriver.

Is this some sort of coating or primer from the factory? Should it be removed or should I rough it up and prime over it?

This is a trail rig with what I hope is a "decent" paint job. Not looking for showroom paint job.

Can't comment on spraying over the base coat with no understanding of it's quality.
Don't pressure wash the stripper into hard to clean places on the body. Not sure how you applied the stripper but there is a technique not to work it back and forward once you apply it on the panel. Use a decent sized squeegee to get it off and then clean it with the hose. Think acetone is the best wash after washing it clean. You will get good advise on the Autobodystore Forum. Post up some pictures if possible and describe the condition of the base coat still on there. Any bare metal will need a good primer then base etc. Regards

Thanks Bigbrown dog, I will try to get some pics of the base coat. It looks to be in decent shape. I was surprised to see this "coating" looking silver color when I was expecting bare shiny metal. Is there a baked on primer or coating that doesn't come off with chemical strippers?

The stripper may have been used up [spent] by the time it got to the base coat. I am only guessing. If it is in a good state it may be better than what you will apply after it's removal that can depend on your experience and technique though. The last time I painted my HJ75 I just sanded, base coat and top coat. However I hope to do it again soon with a quality white paint with clear as a final coat. see PM I sent. Post up some pics on Autobodyshop Forum plenty of body repairmen and painters on there that will help. Regards

I've had similar problems with SOME primers on toyota vehicles in the past. To remedy that (I pretty much use it on all panels I strip) I take a stainless steel pad(see attached pic) and lacquer thinner. It will get 99% of all the paint/primer the stripper can't. Use the thinner generously and make sure you wear heavy rubber gloves. You will be left with the shiny metal you talked about earlier. No good on body filler/bondo. Hope this helps. :hillbilly:

Thanks, I will use that method to clean up before prime and paint.

Ran into that primer when doing my kick vents, whatever it is, its excellent stuff, some sort of etch primer I'd say.
Paint stripper didn't touch it, ended up wire wheeling it off and even that took a while!
Reason I bothered getting it off was because I plated the vents.
