So after hearing all the horror stories (Like this: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/220710-heads-up-check-your-fan-blades.html) about the original old 4 blade F motor fans I decided to upgrade to the newer 6 blade plastic fan on my 65 FJ45 at the suggestion of others. I decided to ask my go to cruiser genius cruiserbrett which fan to use and he pointed me in the right direction.

Here's what I used:

-Newer mid 70's 6 blade plastic fan (non-clutch version).
-F engine fan spacer (I first installed it without but it was about 1/8" from the fan belt).
-Longer bolts (and lock washers) that I matched up to the fan and spacer.

Here's what it looked like before...

Here I lined up the spacer with the fan...

I removed the 4 blade fan and matched the old bolts up at the hardware store and left about 1/2" extra which was close to what came through with the original 4 blade fan...

Once installed, I checked for clearance. Here's a view of the spacing from the radiator (shroud not attached)...

Now I have piece of mind that the fan isn't going to destroy the old original radiator still sitting in this classic.

Thanks to those that suggested this upgrade before it let loose.

Is there a reason for not using a clutch style fan? Thanks, ty

Was not introduced until 1977 on USA 40 series, and is not compatible with the early single-groove pulley and water pump assembly.

Looks good Dom!

I need to do this to mine as well, can you post up the part numbers of the fan and spacer? The truck is looking great!

X2. I'm still sporting the old metal 4 blade.

I would asume this works for the 155 as well??

Just did this on my 72 FJ40 with the original F motor, and feel a lot better about getting rid of the old metal fan. My original metal fan was cracked, and replaced once. I had a machinist friend make me a thicker spacer to move the plastic fan a bit more forward to clear the PS pump drive belt - my PS pump mounts to the right side of the F motor, with the belt forward of the alternator belt. I also used a shroud from a 2F. Seems to move a lot more air.

Dom, that fan looks new. Were you able to get it from the Toyota dealer? I found mine at a swap meet.

My fan is in good shape, but like DomSmith I recently read those horror stories and plan on replacing mine.

Part #'s I came up with from toyodiy.com:
16361-60090 6 blade fan (F, 2F; FJ4*, 55)
16365-60030 spacer (F; FJ40, 55)

I'm not sure if the above spacer will move the fan far enough away from the belt and haven't checked on availability through dealers.

If you're upgrading up to dual pulley for ps, the clutch fan shouldn't be a problem. Am I right?
Thanks, ty

your set up looks very clean!

Yeah, what Steve said... :grinpimp:

I ordered the fan new from Toyota. I believe the spacer is discontinued. I got one from SOR and immediately realized I've had at least one floating around my garage for a long time. I never knew what it was but assumed it was some kind of steering coupler...

Im redoing my entire cooling system and want to replace the 4 blade but $75-$100+ dollars for a plastic fan? Is there an aftermarket equivalent?

I just bought a used plastic fan (like the one above) with the spacer and bolts off ebay for $40 shipped
There is one on ebay but its cracked. Id rather not trust a used fan because you never now the history. Not crazy about the big flex fans as they will require a 1" spacer to deal with the 2 1/4" depth. It puts it a little far into the shroud beyond the 50/50 recommendation. Same is true of a lot of the nylon fans though less so as they would likely only need a 1/2". Unfortunately there are not a lot of options at 16". Would a low profile 15" fan (one inch smaller diameter) be a huge loss in my factory shroud? Maybe Im over thinking this as the OEM plastic fan gets spaced into the shroud.
