Exterior 12V Outlet - Roof Tent Power

I just pulled the factory roof rack off my 80 as I have a roof tent on order. I think I want to run power to the roof tent for lighting, possible inverter, and what not. I will need to be able to take my tent on and off so hard wiring is not an option. So I'm looking for some sort of 12V plug outlet that is completely sealed. I think I'll have power leads coming up through the former roof rack holes, and from there they will need to go to the plug. The contacts will be outside the vehicle so they need to be waterproof as well. All the standard 12V plugs (cigarette lighter style) I've found, although waterproof on the outside, assume that the terminals are "inside" so don't need waterproofing. Anybody know of a different style?

The other option I can think of is to drill a bigger hole in my roof and have the 12V outlet permanently fixed there. Although this might look cleaner than having the outlet strapped to the roof rack (or worse taped down to the roof if I need to remove the rack to fit somewhere), I'm not sure there is a location to place this that will allow the outlet to fit without pushing down into the headliner. I'm also not keen on the idea of drilling another hole in my roof. I'm not sure I will ever trust my sealing job.

Anybody have any suggestions for getting 12V power outside the vehicle?

Cheers,

The marine ones work great if they are mounted in something, but I don't really want to drill a hole big enough in my roof to mount that. If it's not mounted the terminals are exposed and not waterproofed.

Why not install the outlet in the rear of the truck, and run a cord up to the tent through the rear door from the outlet - that way you wont have a hole in your roof, you won't have to seal anything, you won't be making holes you wish you hadn't and you won't need to rip out your headliner... You could just make a box with a few 12V outlets in it, run some decent 12/2 extention cord cable and put a cig plug plug on the end... waterproof, portable, reliable, easy, & probably pretty cheap too.

Hi Fellow members,
This is my first posting so please bear with me. I own a 1997 FZJ Landcruiser 80 Series and my project is to remove the original Radio/Cassete/CD player and install a MP3 player and UHF. Does anybody have a step by step instruction to carry out same or perhaps some advice as to how to get the original to recognise CD's

Colin - the best thing to do is use the search feature - also you might want to check in the 80 series section. If you can come up with nothing through the searches or in the 80 series section, start a new thread using the topic of "MP3 Player install" or some such thing - not likely to get many answers when posting a question in someone elses thread about 12V outlets. (I'm taking it easy on you because you're new!)

Welcome to mud...
