i'm trying to figure out how to extend my roof rack by about four feet. it fits good on my fj40, but now i want to fit it to my troopy. my only idea so far is to cut each end section off and weld in a two foot section of 1x1 square tubing(the rack is constructed of 1x1) and maybe reinforce it somehow. i'm also gonna mount it to the truck so it will stay on when the top comes off.

any ideas?

Your idea seems fine, I would suggest tying the steel into the original rack, like both the sides and the floor.

I also, think the steel is around.5 or .75 inches square, but I might be wrong.

rezarf, you're right it is .75 inches square. i already have a few sticks of square metal and tying it into the existing rack was my original plan. i'm going to weld in two foot sections at about 1/3 and 2/3 of the rack. that would give me another 4 ft making it 9 1/2 ft. i'll post some pics with more questions soon. thanks.

depending on how heavy a load you're thinking about, could you use the Unistrut-style bolt-on members? Versatile...

thought you guys might want to see my finished product. i cut the ends off and welded in 22 inches per side. it's now 110 inches. gonna fill it with stuff this weekend for a trip. we'll see how it holds up.

That came out GREAT! Looks super factory. Nice looking cruiser too, how did it hold up?

i haven't loaded it down yet(will be doing that this weekend), but think it will hold up fine. i braced it more than it was from the factory, but the weight is still distributed from just the 6 roof clamps. the actual rack is not that much heavier, maybe another 15 lbs. can't wait to load it up.
