I'm offering my Expedition Trailer for sale to my ONSC family first, if no takers, I will offer it to the WWW.

Why? As much as I love traveling in this mode, my lovely spouse prefers more "comfortable" accommodations. She said that if she wants me to have her along, we need to change things up.

I was inspired by all the examples I saw in my great trip of '08 from NC to Rubithon/CA/AZ/Moab/Ouray to NC, so I built one the next summer. Here is the build thread and the summary of the build:

Time to share my home built trailer project...

The design is based off the M416 trailers:

  • titled/registered in NC
  • fully constructed of 1.75/0.120" DOM tubing
  • skinned with 16g sheet metal
  • covered with Raptor bed liner on all sides
  • bed floor of red oak and Bedwood strips
  • custom 3500lb axle w/e-brakes
  • FJ40 fiberglass top sectioned/strengthened for front mounted hinge
  • Camping Labs RTT, Large model
  • Lock & Roll hitch
  • 7 pin trailer wiring
  • LED lighting inside and out
  • 20g fresh water tank w/12v pump
  • Fat50 battery box
  • 31 X 9.50 X 16 tires, 6 on 5.5" wheels w/complete spare
I have driven it to OBX, Harlan, AZ/NM/Moab/Ouray, pulls like it isn't there.

In a testament to it's strength, full disclosure includes the story of me getting to Harlan. Leaving early in the AM, running with the tube doors, 35" Swampers singing in the cool, pre-dawn air, I hear an occasional scraping as I pass under the occasional over-pass. After the 3rd time (yeah, I'm slow), I pull over to find this:

My wheel was attacked by stud beavers, losing the tire/wheel, causing this:

Fortunately, I found the wheel (now the base of my grinder stand) as I was returning from getting a replacement hub near G-boro and inspired me to replace the crappy trailer fenders with more 1.75/0.120" tubing shaped to replace the fenders. Now, the entire external structure is one giant slider.

The crazy thing about this, is that it towed perfectly, I never knew when I lost the wheel and I towed it to Moab the next summer without any issues at all. It is built to be used.
