putting a new exhaust on my 92 ext cab 3.0 v6. thinking of going to 2.5 inch maybe get some more hp. also looking at the k and n intake any one been here and done that.
2.5" is big. i wouldnt run it. i use 2.25" and a glasspack. breathes just fine.
K&N-meh. not a good off road filter. fine if your a mall crawler. no power increase noted.
you want real power: port and polish the heads, bore it.
On the exhaust side of a 3vze the biggest improvement is going to be a header kit that moves the crossover pipe below and behind the bellhousing. LCEngineering sells such a kit, and if memory serves me correctly it runs about $800. It is also good for an almost noticeable powergain, almost but not quite noticeable.
Exhaust benefits from greater velocity, not volume. An engine will benefit from a larger volume exhaust system if it's breathing more air & fuel (boost, boring/head work, ext). The volume of gas required to expel the exhaust is slightly increased with a mismatched system.
Sorry dude, you're on the Slo bus. Don't worry, you can make it damn reliable, just not fast.
