Hey All,

Last night I got started on this long over due project so I finally have a better visual idea of what i'm working with.

I have the engine jacked up, heat shield removed and access to all the nuts. I sprayed them all down with some penetrant to soak overnight and will continue on today.

My issue I had last night was that I could not for the life of me figure out how to remove the heat shield, it seemed to get stuck either way I removed it so what I ended up doing was removing the oil filter and pulling it from the front.

Now i'm wondering if I had so much trouble removing the heat shield, what is the correct location to pull the exhaust header itself from? The top, bottom, the bottom rear of the engine?

Any insight would be super helpful. I am working on the DRIVER side of my 2000 Land Cruiser so no AHC.

Thank you!

I removed the driver side heat shield and exhaust manifold towards the front but I also had the steering rack and intermediate shaft out. If removing towards the rear, you’ll need to drop the catalytic converter.

For anyone thinking of doing this, also consider doing the steering rack and axles at the same time as once removed it provides great access. I had just done the axles less than 5k miles before.

You don’t need to remove the heat shield. Just unbolt and pull down toward the oil filter it will just sit down there. If you want to replace it with new, wait until you pull the manifold out. You will remove the manifold by pulling it toward the back and down. Really easy.
