Lose of ability to accelerate or maintain speed probably due to lack of sufficient voltage to fuel pump.

My 1  brain was trying to figure out how his lack of acceleration comment came into play.

I guess low voltage could also screw up the ECU (not permanently) since electronic chips need a minimum amount of voltage to function. Granted, it's probably CMOS (low power), but still, it needs a constant, regulated voltage.

I had the same problem happen to me earlier this year. Look for my post on "self starting". It was the starter contacts. I had the wife rent a car for a week until I got around to fixing it (I also had to wait for the parts to arrive from CDan). The contacts are not expensive, but it was a PITA to pull the starter off - not much clearance. When I pulled the contacts apart I could see what was happening. Mine were badly worn and "sticking" in the groove they created over the years.

Has anyone given thought to using a stronger spring that would force the contacts to disengage better?

Since I have replaced the starter contacts I have had no problems whatsoever.

This is appears to be a VERY common problem with Land Cruisers.

I don't know much about your rig (how many miles, etc...), but the starter is expensive. My starter worked fine, it was just the contacts that were worn.

So, would you recommend just replacing the starter contacts or replacing the whole starter?

if you still have your original starter (not a rebuild) I would do the contacts, after that is done need to see if you had any other damge, the burning smell is not good.

My truck has about 120,000 miles and still the orginal starter. I never had problems starting it. Actually I never had any problems with the car at all. I always did the regular 30,000 total maintenance and every 3,000 oil change.

I forgot about the "burning smell". I caught my starter issues very early on and was able to fix it right away. I had no burning smell.

If you have been running it this way for awhile, then maybe you should replace the entire starter.

Pull it off (you have to pull the starter anyway to fix the starter contacts) and inspect it on the workbench. If it looks or smells bad - replace it.

Most people just replace the contacts.

I had my entire starter replaced recently, but only because it was under warranty...and that's how Lexus handles stuff like that (no repairs, just replacement).

I just went through the whole dance...tried the contacts, still no start, so went back and replaced the starter with a reman unit from C-Dan. Personally if this has been happening for a month or so I would lean toward replacing the entire unit. But if the $30 in contacts fixes it then your set.

In my case it didn't so I went back to Dan and got the whole thing. But I did keep the set of contacts for a spare down the line. But somehow I ended up with two sets of contacts! Dan..?:D Thanks to Dan I am set for a looooong time.

Would figured I get extended warranty and never use it but now that it runs out, I would need it. Grrr... Who is C-Dan?

Contact info for C-Dan

Second to none in parts and service needs. Great prices and if your lucky enough to not live in New Mexico (:D) no tax.

Give him a call...he WILL take care of you.

Thanks! I have been to New Mexico but I live in heaven. (Fields of Dreams movie-- "Is this heaven? No, its Iowa!) haha.

LOL! I've been to different parts of Iowa on several different business trips...I don't think "heaven" was one of the words I would've chosen to describe where I was (Sioux City and Des Moines)...but the people there seemed to like it well enough.

Best steaks I've ever had were in IA though...so it's got something going for it. :D

You should try the corn also. Like any other places that you travel, go local. We have been known to be really friendly too!:-)

Oh...don't get me wrong...the people were great. Very warm and friendly.

It was...uh...well...just Iowa... :)
Not as much in the way of endless fields of corn as what I experienced in Nebraska...
Des Moines seemed to have more going on than Sioux City.
Sioux City (not to be confused with North Sioux City (South Dakota) or South Sioux City (Nebraska) which are both just a few miles away) was pretty quiet. In an odd way, they seemed kind of proud of the spectacular plan crash they had there back in the 80s or 90s.

Doug, you are so right. I did more traveling around the world then I did in Iowa. I only started to look around my backyard when I had visitors and was taking them on tours and looking up local things to do. They all seem to like it :-) Come back to Iowa during the Iowa State Fair in August.

Okay, I guess I will have to take my truck in since I talk to a few people and they said that they are worried since there was a burnt smell. That way I can get it all check out.

IMHO the starter is an easy job and you will save yourself a whole lot of money if you just do it yourself. I had a 84 CUCV(read chevy) in Iraq which was built with a defective starter relay and liked to engage the starter at just any old time. I loaned it out to somewhone for a convoy, and they didn't know how to make it stop(bang on dashboard with goverment issued Kevlar helment) they fried the starter, alternator and warious wires in between. Anyway, the chances are that the burnig smell is the starter, alternator or one of the wires in between. SOOOOOOOOOO

Pull the starter, replace the contacts and the plunger, C-dan or 10 bucks at kragen, bench test your starter, check alternator wires and starter wires for shorts and intstall starter. Start vehicle and observe volt gauge, if not charging, make sure you reconnected the alternator :D , and if you did turn vehicle off and call cdan for an alternator.

Just my .04

Good luck

Dan

I do need to make sure it's during state fair time -- I've always wanted to see large butter sculptures. Butter Elvis? Butter Cow? Butter Da Vinci's Last Supper? Can't get better than that :D

Maybe I should marry a mechanic? The labor to replace the start contact is $215 plus tax but the part is only $31. The labor to replace the starter is only $120 plus tax but the part is $305. Well, I am taking this week off so maybe I will do some playing around and see what I can figure out.

Doug, don't forget to see the BIG BULL. :O It weight over 1200 pounds. You should see the thing that hangs low on it!
