Yes, like RavenTai sais FSM is the factory service manual. CruiserDan can get it for you at a good price or you can get 24 access online for $10 through toyota's web site.
The diagnostic connector on my '96 was on the engine side of the firewall on the passenger side. I think it says "diagnostic" or something similar on the plastic cover. The pinouts are labeled on the inside of the cover as I recall.
The Instructions posted above from RavenTai are excatly what you'll find in the FSM, except the FSM will tell you what the codes you find mean, and also how to troubleshoot each code.
