My plan is to flush the coolant out tomorrow but cant find the post where they list step by step on what to do. I remember seeing it several times but obviously I am not searching the forum archives correctly.
Any help?

Chris

When you doing it? Need help? I plan on doing the same thing next week, and wouldn't mind seeing it done first.

I live in mesa, work in scottsdale. Where are you?

Jared

Jared,

I was planning to do this tomorrow since I have a long weekend. Are you part of AZTLC club? The meeting is tonight at 7pm Scott Toyota. I figured it would be messy so I might do it at work instead of my driveway :D

Jared, BTW still want those 2 stock LTXs Michellins we talked about around Christmas?

I might try and get to that meeting. It has been a long time since I attended one. I am working in Scottsdale not to far from there.

Where is your work? I have to work some tomorrow, but I can be flexible about it.

About the tires--I took the 80 wheeling, suffered a blowout and convinced the wife we needed new 285/75 BFGs. It was costly, but I really needed to do it. All four remaining tires were really getting to bare.

I work near the vehicle inspection, 8321 e evans rd. Its not a rush job but have the time tomorrow, come tothe meeting tonight I can meet you then and talk about details.
The club is really showing new life.

Fact.

Where do you get rid of all the old coolant?

The last time I did this my dog got in it and drank about a 2 qts of it, he survived but is blind in his right eye. :D

I think autozone, checker, napa disposes of it for you.

Cool. Thanks.

some municipalities allow for small ammounts of ethylene glycol in the sewage system, (call first they may also severly fine you if they do not allow it and can trace it back to you) it is biodegradable but very toxic until it does degrade, it should be safe from pets in the sewer system and will be neutralized before going into the enviornment,

World health orginazition:
"Ethylene glycol is readily biodegradable in standard tests using sewage sludge. Many studies show biodegradation under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Some studies suggest a lag phase before degradation, but many do not. Degradation occurs in both adapted and unadapted sludges. Rapid degradation has been reported in surface waters (less in salt water than in fresh water), groundwater, and soil inocula. Several strains of microorganisms capable of utilizing ethylene glycol as a carbon source have been identified."

Appears I could then pour it into my septic tank safely. Wasn't sure about that, but it really looks like a good option. Better than hauling it to NAPA. Not sure what they'd do for certain, since we wouldn't be a huge recycling center in my small town.

Thanks

truth be told I know a "friend" who did the same not sure if the ceptic system will hold on to it long enough to completely degrade it, if you have a well also it may not be a good idea, (my "frined" is on city water) otherwise in the ground it is safe from pets and wildlife and will degrade in a few days under propper conditions

I have heard from several places that it's best to just dump it down your toilet with LOTS of water, so it's very diluted. Now I am on city sewer, I don't know if this would be different if you just had your own sewer system in your back yard. The only downside I can think is that you don't want the antifreeze to kill any bacteria in your septic system, since then it will clog up, since it's not working right, etc. My sister went through that in Ohio, previous owner of their house would routinely dump like bleach or something in the sewer, nobody was sure why.

Not a hard process, I would pull the bolt on the side of the engine first, it'll shoot coolant like mad then, makes a huge mess.. :)

Good Luck.

my....err my friends septic system is still doing well after a dose last fall from a Chevy and again a month or so ago but only one person "using" it is not to hard on a system built for a 3 BR house

diluting with lots of water sounds like a good Idea,

just a tip for the septic system owners I have heard from several different sources to never use powdered Tide with a septic system, apparently it forms a hard scaly deposit that will clog it up, the liquid stuff is supposedly OK

I'm not worried about the well. It is on the other side of my little hill, and 382 feet below the surface ($$$). Anything I put down the drain goes to the tank and then downhill into the drainfield 30 yards in the other direction, where the bacteria will have 1000 years to do what they need to do. If it can be composted, that's the best way. And, of course, I agree. Dilution is the solution to pollution. For your, Uh, friend. :D

Lars, the flush went fine. I didnt see any sludge or sediment. Last week I posted the pic with rust film on the oil. It had the green stuff and I used Toyota red. I followed Beos step by step under the FAQ section on this site and basic intution on what had to be done. I used flush agent but didnt use the prestone kit, didnt want to cut hose, etc. I had to flush about 4 times to get rid of the green(hopefully its all out) I might drain in 6 months to see what the color is and replace thermostat.
