Well I love my 2f and all , it's great in my FJ40, but not so great in my FJ60... After looking at the Tax insentives for brewing your own diesel it really seems like a no brainer to go diesel.... With that out of the way...

What Diesel truck engine would you pic to put into an FJ60... I was thinking just buying a used truck with a diesel in it because almost everthing I would need to complete the conversion would be there on the donor truck..

well.... lot's of thread on this. check the FAQ at the top of the page for the classics. yes getting the full donor is a good idea because there will be all sorts of things specific to the diesel and not on your FJ60.

basic run down:
3B from a BJ60-- needs a B series specific tranny/input shaft, so might as well look for one mated to an H55F

2H or 12HT from an HJ60/61 will bolt to your existing H42

13BT+H55F from a JDM BJ74 or the like, can do a half-cut

The Chebby diesels use the same bell housing etc. as the SBC 350 gassers, so all the adapters out there will work on them.

The Cummins engines are more modern, powerful, and fuel efficient, and less expensive than the Toy diesels (generally). Breadvans...

My particular pick would be a 13BT+H55F combo. Not the cheapest, but plenty of power, excellent economy. If you go with a 3B you will want to put a turbo on anyhow...

Search for "Stickboy" and you will get his lengthy conversion thread. Very detailed except the pics no longer work.

best thing I can say is do a little search. Massive threads on this. Its like tires in the 40 section :)

cheapest toy option, is getting a donor vehicle from Canada.

Those donor diesel trucks from Canada will be getting a little thin soon;)

lol, they are. But many are finially getting too rusty to drive. So they will be parted or sold as donors.

funny though, not that many are buying them and doing conversions. If you come to my area, there is Cruisers everywhere. Rusty of course. I have never seen so many cruisers, they come here to die! Isn;t that right 2rivers?

yah but not many at wreaking yards. There is one very picked over bj60 in my local yard. And those who own them still want more than I can swing for a parts truck. But yes, lots of diesel cruisers in my area. Or BC for that matter.

I guess I should have been more specific about the type of truck I was looking into, I was looking at 1990's dodge trucks and Ford & GM trucks, just because I'd imagine finding parts for these engines would be easier then Toyota diesels in AZ..

most of the big 3 diesels are too big/heavy. they also require a soa. there are guys with them. But the 5.9 cummins is very long. Seen one cruiser on the web with it. the 4 cylinder 3.9 cummins is the one most in the usa are doing.

if you want to keep your tranny, the 6.2 chev is a good option.

the powerstokes would be too much work.

I think the optimum size is going to be around the 4 litre mark in displacement. ie cummins or toyota . you can't use the added power to tow anything, so why go so big.

Hi All:

Do a search of posts by "Fe Sus"; he recently swapped the drivetrain from a BJ60 into a FJ60.

Proffitt's Cruiser's in Colorado does the Cummins I-4 swap; they would be an excellant resource for you if you choose that engine.

I'd think the GM 6.2 Litre V-8 diesel, pulled from a donor truck, would be the easiest of the domestic US diesels to swap in, but it is far more involved than the typical SBC swap.

Regards,

Alan

Cummins 4BT from a bread truck. Cheap, plentiful, and can be hopped up very easily.

Profitts has this swap dialed in from all indications. It is a VERY deep engine, and requires a SOA afaik.
