What are people using to elevate the vehicle in order to work on the undercarriage? I dont have a bay so either ramps or lifts uder the axles is what i can come up with.

I can use a 5 gallon bucket to drain the oil, and have pulled the xfer case a few times without raising the truck. But I have about 4" of suspension and 35" tires, too. I only need to raise it to change out suspension components. I like having it supported by tires and springs when I do differential work.
I own 3 floor lacks and 6 jack stands, and use them as necessary to raise and support the vehicle. Sometimes I use a creeper, and sometimes not, depending on my mood, access space, amount of crap on the floor to prevent rolling, etc.
Be safe, and be sure the vehicle is safely supported with adequate stands if you are working with it lifted up. Floor jacks will slowly drop, so I don't depend on them if I was to place myself under the vehicle.

I only have 31's and have plenty of room to roll around under mine. I guess if you need more room, jack it up and place some good jackstands under the frame and/or axles. Be careful, these things are heavy.

I prefer precariously balanced, tiny pieces of 2x4, right under the roundest part of the axle. Make sure the tires are off and even better, the brake drums and rotors. This assures me lots of business here in the ER.

Get a nice, low-profile creeper and some jackstands. That should give you enough access for just about anything. Creative use of a Hi-Lift and strategic jackstand placements can get you pretty far. Just pay attention to what you're doing and be sure everything is stable before you ever crawl under a jacked or supported vehicle. Be safe!
On a similar note, we were just talking here at work about a call we had about 2 years ago. A guy was parked ont he shoulder of I-94 changing a flat tire. He had the car on a wimpy OEM jack, but was stupid enough to stick his head under the side rocker just underneath the door. Well, a semi drove by and created a little but of wind gust knocking the car off the jack. Crushed the poor guys head - dead on the spot. So the moral of the story is, unless it's on four wheels or securely jacked up on jack stands, don't get underneath any part of the truck.
We just had Bush visit our local training facility last week and a bunch of guys got to sit and b.s. w/ some secret service guys - they were the ones that actually called it in -- from their chopper when they were in town preparing for some dignitary's arrival back then. They apparently have some pretty hi-tech cameras enabling them to see it at night.
