Recently having electrical problems with both my cruiser and my boats mercruiser that needed fixing I was stumped. Finally I got my wife to look at the non working gauges while I was in the motor areas. The gauges would go on and off while I metered electrical equipment and looked for shorts or bad equipment.what I found to be the problem was bad negative or earth wires in both the fj60 and Mercruiser. The wires did not look bad at all but were corroded on the inside bad enough to effect the performance of both the cruiser and Mercruiser. I have started replacing all our negative or earth ground wires . Idle has improved, performance improved ,hole shot on Mercruiser improved .No more weird electrical problems. If your negative battery cable is old I’d replace it and see if your motor doesn’t drastically improve like ours.
