Warning: Long post
I mainly just lurk around here but I've run into an issue and could use some help
I finally got my 87 Turbo 4Runner pretty good then other day when everything on the instrument cluster shut's off except the charging light. I get home and whip out the DVOM and sure enough the alternator isn't charging. Put a new one in and still no instrument cluster light and it seems that the alternator is still not charging.

So I pull the alternator, have it tested, and it passes. By this time it's dark so I don't like messing with it. I get on the forum to see why the instrument cluster went out and found a post with a similar problem and it turned out to be the engine fuse. I pull the fuse and sure enough it's blown. I replace it and the instrument cluster comes on. In my excitement I decide to get in and run to the store forgetting that I have no alternator.

Well it dies and I once again have no power. I'm assuming that the disconnected alternator lead touched to ground because I blew the 80A Alt fuse. I also destroyed the fuse trying to get it out. So I decided to bypass the stock fuse block and wire in an 80A Maxi-Fuse. The problem I have now is it seems like I'm not getting any spark and the only electrical items that work are the gauges, rear window, and marker lights.

Any Ideas?

I've tried getting the EWD over on the TTORA page to open but it wont. Anybody have a link to a wiring diagram?

Did you destroy the fuse block or fuse? If actually the fuse, why by pass the OE fuse block?

I would suggest you remove any and all changes. It is very hard to figure things out when you keep introducing new potential issues. Make sense?

Use the OE fuse block/fuse, put in the alt and report back.

Dumb thought but pending the fuse block a lot of the times the power wire such as lets say the ACC wire runs an series of fuses so for instance if you robbed the ACC wire coming into the fuse block to feed your single fuse you may have robbed the power from the rest of the series of fuses. I hope that makes sense and again I am speaking in general such as my 80 yota pickup and fj40 I am unsure of your 87 fuse block

stock is best, stock is best, stock is best..... remove all doubt and return to stock is my guess...

Return to stock is what I ended up doing. The bypass was out of frustration and desperation as I have no other form of transportation to make my 90 mile commute. Once I pulled my head out my ass and got an EWD I realized, which I should of from the get go, that most of the accessories run through the ALT fuse.

And all I did was destroy the fuse. Out of the 4 Truck/4Runners I've owned I've never had to remove the ALT fuse and didn't realize that it had to be removed from the bottom of the fuse block.

So all is good now, and I appreciate y'alls help
