Hey IPPS! I recently picked up two piggies, a 71 from LA and a 75 from Texas. The plan is to restore the 75 and see how that goes. The 71 will be a reference vehicle for me to put the other back together.
The 71 is pretty much stock. I decided to put a little time/money into her to get it mobile (It sat in an LA backyard for 10 years working on its patina).
New tires, battery, brake booster, drums, rebuilt carb, eliminated points, overall tuneup... She was doing fine until the other day when I decided to 'fix' her shifting problem.
I took apart the column and tightened things back up. Put everything back where it was and all of a sudden I had no headlights. I scratched my head a bit but decided to put her away for a week and come back to it this weekend.
Yesterday I try to start her up. Dead battery, I mean REALLY dead. Threw a jump box on it and she started right up but would not stay running once the jump box was removed. Took the battery and had it tested to find out it had a short. (It was never hooked up backwards or shorted against a ground)
So that leave me wondering what has led me here. Leading theory is a bad alternator or voltage regulator but all of a sudden? I am leaning toward the voltage regulator but plan to rebuild the alternator either way.
Any thoughts as to what might have happened to get me here are welcome.
