Anyone have any luck using any of the full steering kits on eBay? My 86 runner needs new tierod ends, and pitman arm, I have seen full kits that replace everything including the ball joints and steering box arm for under $200.00, I wonder if it is worth it? Anyone have suggestions on where to purchase GOOD QUILTY steering components for an 86 4Runner?

i hate to say it, but for a safety item like steering components i would definitely pay the extra coin for dealer parts.

i mean, dang they only lasted 26 years right? bet you wont find an aftermarket part that will last you 26 years before replacement. maybe 10 at tops with a Moog part??

the left and right tie rod assembly from toyotapartseast.com is $91 per side. so figure 200 bucks over 26 years. wouldnt you pay $7.69 per year for OEM steering parts?

dont know what the cost of aftermarket parts are but divide it up by cost per year.

just my opinion

Yeah this is not a money issue for me, I have no problems spending money for good parts. I am going to the Toyota dealership to price it out. The parts guy here likes that I am bringing an old 4Runner back to life, so he generally cuts me a brake on the prices. After carful thought I am NOT going to get the eBay kit. Thanks for the input!

Just spent a but load on Moog tire rod ends, inner and outer, pitman arm, and idler arm. Total was a bit over $400.00, started to get prices from the dealer, that total would have been at least $500.00. Oh well after 26 years I guess it was time, now I need to figure out if I can reseal the steering box or go for a good used box.

what all did you get?
more than innner and outer tie rods i hope.

oh i see. rod ends plus pitman and idler...

online, the pitman is $128, plus 2 of the $91 left and right hand tie rod assemblies (thats both ends and the adjuster) is only $310.
As far as the idler arm, i wouldn't replace it with the stock one anyways. the second gen 4runner idler arm is a direct bolt in and beefier upgrade.

actually, according to SDORI, the general aftermarket replacement from autozone is EVEN BEEFIER than than the OEM second gen idler arm because it uses even larger bearings than the oem one. and it has a lifetime warranty. so it would be like a double upgrade...kind of. according to their website the auto-zone special (which is supposedly vastly better than the first gen oem) is only like 60 bucks or something.

so you are looking at 370, maybe 400 after shipping? for all oem except the idler.

It might be a bit late now but I'll sell you the genuine Toyota stuff cheap. I just replaced most of what you're talking about on my '86 pickup and I'm glad I spent the extra money. I'm getting ready to add the OME 2.5 inch lift too and that's about as far as I'll do with modifications. Send me and email or call me if you're still looking for parts.

Yeah you're too late, I replaced all my steering components with Moog parts, very expensive but it looks like real good stuff, made in the US as well and everything has grease fittings and thick boots. Thanks anyway.
