This may be on here already, but I thought I'd show how I put a standard gm alternator on my 40 in a snap. All you have to do is remove the original F engine alternator bracket, cut off about 1 5/16" off the face of the bottom hole and then you can put a regular $35.00 gm alternator on the F engine with no special brackets, kits, etc. I used a porta band saw to make the cut, if you have access to a regular band saw, it would be a breeze. Here's a link to some pics of what it looks like when installed and the piece you cut off. I'm running the alternator as a 1 wire, one wire running from battery to bat terminal on alt, and a wire jumped from the bat terminal to #2 terminal. I don't have to run switched power to term 1, just rev it up a bit and it works fine. I'm not sure how long this setup will work before I have to put in a switched power wire, we'll see. Good luck, Richard

What is the amperage output of the alternator you used? And did you have to midify your wiring harness(other than to connect to the alternator) to handle the higher amperage(if it is higher?)

Autozone.com has an alternator for an F listed at $36.99. I think it is cool that you found a way to fit the non-stock piece on and make it a clean and simple instalation, but was it worth it to save $2? If you're concerned about being stranded in the middle of nowhere with a dead F alternator, one from a '79 Toyota pickup works easily enough and most places stock one.
