Nice, just did this job yesterday too. The new ones use a broad square casing that leaves no chance for the wire to find the gap. I didn't have that problem but mine were stretched over the years camping. 4 kids on the tailgate is too much! :)

Easy 5 minute job with a T40 and impact driver.

Would this be backwards compatible with all years of LC?
 
Don't mean to hijack the thread, but since OP and KLF mentioned the hard drive, I took apart an old bad sector ridden Western Digital hard drive. Took out 2 magnets after unscrewing like 30 tiny Torx screws, and the magnets are very strong (almost got my finger stuck between the 2 magnets) and good sized. I'll be using these magnets to contain the tailgate cable that's getting caught by the rear tailgate :)

Thanks for this. Did this today and slapped the 2 magnets onto my tailgate.
