Dump the Patrol for a Land Cruiser?

No, not me silly! But this little gem has gotten Aussie Patrol owners on Patrol 4x4 considering dumping their Patrols for a Land Cruiser. Amazingly, no one has been flamed for considering such a sacrilege.

I would be tempted too if I had the coin and possibility to purchase it in Canada. It sure does look sweet and simple. I don't get why the Toyota will do public sales of vehicles brought in primarily for the mining market in Australia but will not do the same here.

If I had that beaut I would build an aluminum canopy/storage box in the tray and mount a RTT on top flush with the roof line - that would be a roomy go-anywhere rig

Sopel bough his fancy Ford pick up, with all the goodies for somewhere close to $65-70,000. If I have the money and choice, no contest, I'll take the Land Cruiser for that. Most of the Fords and Dodge trucks around town cost the same, but as opposed to offering a reliable, heavy duty truck, they offer leather seats, power everything and a turning radius equivalent to an 18 wheeler.

with that 4.5-litre V8 turbo diesel engine 151kW (202 hp) and 430 Nm (317 ft.-lbs.) - I should be able keep up to Greg's diesel 80 on the Interstate. Just ship me the power train for now ...

Actually the Aussies (and probably others) have been chopping 70 series and Patrols into this for some time now. It isn't cheap, so it sure is sweet to see it come this way from the factory. I am sure it was done this way because the mining companies demanded more crew room than the usual 2 seater tray-backs. But the concept was home brew. IMO, the 70 series looks the best in the dual cab.

The pick up boxes with the drop down sides are a nice touch for versatility. The factory dual cab looks a lot tighter compared to the chopped wagon pick up, the factory proportions look perfect to me.

I was just looking at some of the other articles in Car Advice, and there is this one for the Rav4 getting a diesel in it because North Queensland customers demanded it. How come that doesn't work for us when we demand something in a diesel power plant. There is another article were you could buy a striped down 200 series with the goodies, that is designed for the people who want to use it as a workhorse. Only in Austrailia.

I agree Lance, you would think that we would have more of a consumer force in North America than the few in North Queensland. This of course tends to make people think that a back room deal was made with governments/industry in North America to keep these options away from our consumers. They can't use the LHD / RHD market excuse either. We know that they market many more LHDs than RHD all over the world. Tapage has confirmed that Toyota has confirmed that it will continue selling all the base 70 series in Latin America. So all the LHDs you want are still rolling off their factory floors.

I think the tray backs with the flip down sides - although not looking as perfect - equal good utility value. The last pic kind of looks weird but again, I am sure it was built that way for utility not for beauty.

It always amazes me down in south/central america just how much the Japanese brands OWN the area. EVERYTHING is Japanese down there. Ford/Chrysler/GM can't compete in their own backyard.
