Anyone have any experience (good or bad) with Merritt:

I spoke with Jared there this morning about cleaning a couple of 80 series steering gearboxes for me in preparation for teardown and overhaul, and he mentioned that he had a Land Cruiser in his shop for frame cleaning now, and had done scores of them in the past.

Details will (likely) go into the wrenching thread later...

The verdict is in on Merritt:

10/10! I spent a couple of hours with Jared and company this afternoon, and I was impressed. Anyone who knows me knows that's not easy to do.

Jared tells me he's been in business since 2016, and almost all of his automotive work is on Land Cruisers. He has an 80 in the shop that he'd just finished cleaning and undercoating. It was very sharp.

Dry ice blasting, vapor hone blasting, laser etch cleaning, and undercoating.

Photos and video walk through of the latest project – a 70 series outbound for CA – soon.

For anyone in the club: if you have parts that need to be cleaned, that you would normally sandblast, I can add them to my orders for Jared to clean them. Dry ice is completely noninvasive, safe for almost every material, and leaves no residue. It takes minutes, not hours, to clean most anything. Contrary to sandblasting, protective coatings, like cad plating, are completely preserved, while the contamination is removed. Light rust will also be gone, but heavy rust requires abrasive, chemical etching, or laser cleaning.

The best part about all these cleaning services is that they are very quick; minutes not hours.

I'll be taking a couple of A442F transmissions to him to clean later this month, prior to rebuilding, so if anyone has a part, or parts, that need to be cleaned, LMK and I'll take them with me.

He did my 80 series before I put it on BAT, and it turned out great!

We discussed your truck while I was there!

How much does he charge rough estimate for an 80 frame? Icing and undercoating
I think the condition of the frame (how much rust, how dirty is it) and the typing of coating you apply after cleaning and rust removal impacts their quote. I used the most expensive option they recommended (two stage dynitrol coating IIRC), and it was like $3 - $3.5 k. They also cleaned and recoated my rock sliders, which were in pretty rough shape, and then pretty much looked new after they were done. They'll also use a laser rust removal for areas that dry ice alone can't remove the rust. Considering that the quotes I was getting for just sand blasting the surface rust were not that far behind their price, which included the new coating, I thought the prices were pretty competitive for the level of the quality of work they did.

If you can get some high quality photos of the undercarriage, and tell him what you're looking for, he can probably give some estimates over email.
