Hello,
I am new to mud and a proud new owner of a 2000 UZJ 100 with a 142k on it. So far I am loving my LC except for the drone/vibration that I get at 70mph. I thought that maybe it was a driveline issue so I recently had the shafts re-spun and balanced along with new oem u joints. I also got the cv's cleaned, greased, and re-clamped, and had the tires rotated and balanced twice (not road force balanced). The drone/vibration is still there and now when I drive above 70mph I am getting a shimmy or shaking as well as the drone. Also, it seems that if I depress the pedal at 70mph it is really noticeable and subsides when I let off and seems to go away when I put it in neutral. And, I also feel like it can be felt toward the end of second and third. I can't figure out what it could be. After doing a great deal of reading on here I've concluded that this seems to be an issue with some LC's and not others. What are some possible causes for this? Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it is really annoying me that i can't figure out what is causing the drone/vibration. Oh, and it is mostly felt on the drivers side in the floorboard and seat. Thanks in advance.

Very well written. I have numerous posts on here about this but no one seems to know what it is. Your description is identical to mine. I think the vibration and drone seem less pronounced on hot days. Maybe some rubber mount or something swells when hot and absorbs more of the vibration. Let me know if you come up with anything and I will do the same for you.

I have an unexplainable drone/resonance frequency related sound emitting from our LX470 as well. It's most noticeable to me at 70mph and becomes less apparent at 55mph. My wife, nor our kids notice. In addition to that, the steering wheel had noticeable shimmy. Tires (stock size - Continental LX20) were balanced and issue did not resolve itself.

I did however, lubricate the entire drive shaft and the shimmy in the steering wheel has disappeared, however the 70mph droning is still apparent. Lubing the drive shaft also fixed my off-the-line thunk. My CV boots are leaking abit but are not torn.

I have the drone/vibration at 70 as well, I just live with it and drive at 65, saves gas anyways

To the post of living with it is yours a 2000 as well?

Quick update--
I ran it by my local Toyota shop for a road force balance today as I suspected the tires were feathered (PO rarely drove it and likely didn't perform alignments, rotation, and balance as needed). Well, they did confirm that this is the case, but also told me that it is a driveline issue even though I mentioned nothing about the driveline. Maybe the shafts didn't get balanced out to "true" or maybe there is a u joint issue. I gonna take it back by my trusted shop next week and hopefully we will be able to figure it out.
BTW.....I can live with the drone, but the shimmy and shaking just sucks and its not pleasant to drive at highway speeds. And I can't drive 65!!!!

I have it too, but it didn't appear until after my lift and 33" tires.

I'd suspect the CV axles... especially if they are not OEM.

cv axles could cause a drone? I can understand vibration but not sure this could cause a drone. What do you all think?

CV axles? I guess they could cause a drone as well as a vibration, but wouldn't I feel it at all speeds?

Driveline vibrations are not always directly related to speed. They might be noticeable till 70 mph and even go away at 100 mph!

I'd pull the front driveshaft, lock the CDL, drive it in RWD and see what happens.

I had an issue where my LX would drone at high power settings. My foot would go to sleep the vibration was so bad. My mechanic recommended replacing the transmission mount and the vibration is gone. After 7 years the rubber deteriorates. When i pulled the old one and set it beside the new one, the look and feel the same but 10 years is a lot of wear for these mounts. Once i understood how critical the rubber parts were, I replaced the engine mounts and the rear upper/lower control arms and the panhard and so much smoother. Give it a try if your rig is over 7 years especially if you live in the southern US with lots of heat - the rubber just fails.

Wife recently got an '07 LX 470 with 90K miles on it. Experienced a similarly described "droning" at 70-75 mph, but only when under constant load (on gas pedal) and barely audible. When I let off the gas, the droning goes completely away, even when coasting at 70+ mph. As soon as I put pressure on the gas pedal, it comes back, but only when going 70+. Like Cruiser03, I also live in Texas and so did previous owner, so I'm guessing the heat may have deteriorated the rubber bushings. Will look into replacing them and see if that helps.

Part number for my Rear mount is: 12371-50180 cost $86

Anyone find any joy with the transmission mount replacement?

There are a lot of threads on droning but this one seemed to make the most sense because there are inferences to issue not being specific to the model, but to being specific to the climate. Mine is a GA truck.

I have a '96 FZJ w/exactly same droning at 65-75. First started at 60-70 after a 2.5" SLEE lift, bumps, castor correction, etc., on Falken AT3W 33s. Trried new u joints, rear upper control arms...moved the droni ng up to 65-75 but still there exactly as mentioned--drone tapers off when let up on gas then comes back when increasing gas (even with a slight touch). Btw-wife and kids couldn't hear it until a few minutes my explaining either.

Issue is stumping even my excellent toy mechanic who drives an 80 also.

Rubber on transmission and other rubber mounts seem promising as a root cause. The heat and humidity will get at any rubber here eventually.
