My 62 doesn't get near that kind of mileage.... I can't seem to get more than 11-12 per the gauges in the truck and factoring in tire size. Not GPS confirmed though. Mine also gets scary as hell to drive at 60+ MPH, so you might want to allot more drive time. I'm pulling for you.
I bought my cruiser in a similar situation except it was only about a 400 mile drive. Rented a car, went and picked it up. THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. Transmission went out, fried, about halfway home. Fortunately a couple of Mudders were sympathetic to my plight and let me hang out with them until alternate transportation home could be arranged. They recommended a reputable tranny shop there locally that had experience with the A440F and suggested that I have the TC rebuilt while the tranny was being done as well. So, two weeks later I drive down to pick it up again. The rebuild on the TC didn't take.... didn't exactly inspire confidence in the tranny rebuild. So it took them 2 more weeks to get the TC rebuilt correctly. So $3000, a massive amount of drive time and 4 weeks later, I finally got my cruiser home.
MORAL OF THE STORY: TRAIN YOURSELF TO CONSTANTLY CHECK THE A/T TEMP LIGHT ON THE SHIFTER. IF IT COMES ON, PULL OVER, PUT IT IN PARK, AND LEAVE THE ENGINE ON UNTIL THE LIGHT GOES OUT.
I am now pushing 8 months with the 62 as my daily driver and it is finally beginning to earn my trust. It takes time to figure out the bugs with your particular vehicle. New fluids, a couple of new vacuum lines, a new battery, plugs, cap, rotor and wires.... and a $3k rebuilt tranny that I still worry about... but, we are moving along slowly in the healing process.
Keep us posted on how it goes.
