I have travelled to San Ignacio and south of Muleje in my '87 but never did the mountain route. Any details on the path?

Not sure how far south your headed but I highly recommend Aqua Verde. About 2 miles before you reach the actual "town" you will see a turn to the left towards the ocean. REALLY nice campsite. If you pass the turn you will see it when you get to the top of the hill before AV. Anyway.
