Don't want to HAVE to replace starter/contacts...what do you think?

I agree. We had the starter rebuilt by a local shop that I used often in the late 80's when I had a Rabbit GTI (alt & starters did not last long on those things). Did the whole job for $50. Lots of time in it though.

If you are planning on getting a re-man starter, Than I’ll say do the contacts instead.
I haven’t been happy with any re-man parts like starter/alternators. They tear apart lots of
Starters, inspect the parts, segregate the usable parts & build new units form them. Replacing only what is needed. With that in mind, next time you do wheel bearings, just pull them all out, inspect them & throw them in some cleaner and re-install, don’t worry about matching the bearing on their proper races! That’s exactly what happens when they reassemble the starters/alternators. They will work for a while, but they are not going to be the smoothest longest lasting.
If you don’t want to tackle the contacts yourself, than pull it off and take it to a starter shop. You will be much happier in the long run. And it will save you $$.
I’ll bet that if you came across some sort of problem doing it yourself, you can just post it hear and someone can tell you what you need to know/do. I did mine on my fj62 and it wasn’t hard. I have not done it on my 100 yet.

I am with DMX84 on not getting a reman. I have had a lot of trouble with remanned parts (both starters and alternators) and there is not much more frustrating than installing the "new" part and finding out that it won't work. Worst yet they seem to last just long enough for you to have forgotten all you know about troubleshooting them and doing the repair so you have to learn all over again and do the work all over again. Replacing the starter in the 100 is not that simple so I would either pull it out and have your original rebuilt and reinstalled or go with a new unit from toyota ($$$ to crusierdan). If you do go with a reman I would go with NAPA over any of the other parts stores based on personal experiance.
You might also consider using a synthetic engine oil like M1 0w40/delvac 1 5w40. They don't thicken as much as dino when cold, so that helps the engine crank over faster. As far as batteries go, I hear the Panasonics are very good. I'm currently using an optima blue top...so far, I have about 2 yrs on it in AZ (batteries don't last long here due to the heat). I used a diehard in Upstate NY for 6 yrs w/o it dying, though the engine was only a 22re, so a smaller starter.
My 2000 100 series had exactly the same issue you described. Did the contacts about 4 months ago, and it hasn't skipped a beat since. Mine had 93K on it at time of failure. Starter was still in great shape inside... I'd do the contacts.
I replaced my starter contacts as per rph1974's instructions. Works like a champ. Got my parts from Cruiser Dan. He's great to work with and knows what you'll need. Search for rph1974's instructions on the forum after you get the parts. I paid a mehanic to do it as I didn't have the time. Parts and labor for the job cost me $300.00. I would just do the contacts as that is the problem.

Oh well, took the "safe" (LESS-likely-to-have-to-do-it-again) route and ordered a complete starter and intake gaskets from CDan. I hated to spend the extra money, and had the starter been in the "usual" place, I wouldn't have; however, with a 6 hour R&R job looking at me, I just didn't want to take the risk..........
I've noticed that many others have had to do this same job, and I think that every vehicle has its common quirks. Therefore, just to make sure I'm prepared for the future, can anyone provide me with a list of other "typical" problems, other than scheduled maintenance, that I could expect to see on a 99 LX470? I'm at 85,000 miles.............(I'm sure that individual issues can be found in various posts, but it might be nice to have that list in one place - or is there already one?)Thanks,
