With the dome light set to go on and off when the door is open/closed the light remains on (along with the light on the door) when the door is closed. The dome light can be turned off if changed to the off setting; however, the door lights remain on. In addition, the 10 second delay when the key is turned off, that lets you put the window up or down doesn't work either, but the window switch works when the key is on. Every once in a while (random) everything works as it should, but 90% of the time it isn't working. I've changed the dome light out and fiddled with the door switches to no avail. Any help??

Dome light.......

While cleaning the door switches I noticed that when I press the swith in the light dims slightly (both sides did the same thing). Would this indicate some feedback going through the wire? I don't think it is something loose as riding on a very washboard road didn't get it to work any more often that just going down the highway and it will not work for days; however when it does start to work it will only function 5-15 min.

Sounds like the wire to the door switch is shorted to ground. Time to trace your wires. I'd start at the door switch and follow it up to the dome light or integration relay. Don't know if the 1st gen 4runner uses an integration relay. To cause the symptoms you describe I'd expect there is an integration relay of some sort. The power windows need a tap into the door switches for the delay circuit.

I know the 2gen 4runner has those door switches go to an integration relay, and that shorts the dome to ground to turn it on when controlled by the doors.
